Job summary

The Safe Step is seeking an experienced Senior Safety Management Systems Specialist to join the team on a 12 month Fixed Term Contract. The role focuses on simplifying and strengthening the organisation’s Safety Management System, turning complex legislative and operational requirements into practical documentation for frontline teams.

You will lead documentation reviews, risk assessments and continuous improvement initiatives, partnering with operational leaders to embed strong safety practices

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Safety, Environment, Business Administration, Management or a related discipline.
• 10+ years' experience developing and improving Safety Management Systems or Asset Management Systems.
• Strong ability to translate complex safety requirements into clear documentation.
• Experience leading projects and managing change in safety programs.
• Knowledge of auditing standards and regulatory compliance is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review, develop and simplify Safety Management System documentation, procedures, standards and guidelines.
• Translate legislative requirements and critical risks into practical, easy-to-follow documentation.
• Engage with operational teams to ensure documentation reflects real-world practices.
• Facilitate risk assessments and identify gaps and improvement opportunities.
• Lead workshops and reviews to support continuous safety system improvement.
• Develop and maintain supporting tools and controlled documentation.
• Test procedures in the field to ensure they are practical and effective.
• Promote system awareness through training and communications.
• Partner with operational leaders to embed safety practices across the business.
