Job summary

Paxus is seeking a Senior Observability Engineer to join their technology team in Sydney. This hands-on senior role focuses on observability, monitoring, automation and reliability in a large, distributed environment.

You will collaborate with engineering, operations and AiOps to improve telemetry, system visibility and the reliability of critical services. The role requires 5+ years in Observability/SRE/DevOps and strong hands-on with Dynatrace/Datadog, OpenTelemetry, and Terraform.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in Observability, SRE or DevOps engineering.
• Hands-on with Dynatrace, Datadog or similar APM/observability platforms.
• Strong knowledge of OpenTelemetry, metrics, logs and distributed tracing.
• Experience designing and scaling telemetry pipelines.
• Strong IaC and automation such as Terraform.
• Experience with CI/CD and monitoring-as-code.
• Strong Python or scripting experience.
• Experience with Azure or GCP cloud environments.
• Strong Kubernetes experience in monitoring/telemetry.
• Experience defining and implementing SLOs and SLIs.
• Strong understanding of reliability, availability and performance.

Responsibilities

• Design and scale enterprise observability and telemetry platforms.
• Develop and maintain monitoring, logging and tracing standards across apps and infra.
• Work with Dynatrace, Datadog, OpenTelemetry and PagerDuty.
• Design and implement SLOs and SLIs with engineering teams.
• Build and improve telemetry ingestion pipelines for high availability.
• Use IaC and CI/CD to automate observability and monitoring.
• Develop automation, integrations and tooling using Python or similar.
• Support observability across cloud and Kubernetes environments.
• Identify opportunities to optimise telemetry data, storage and licensing costs.
• Create dashboards and insights to understand system health and drive actions.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to other Observability Engineers.
• Act as escalation point for complex observability issues.

Job description

Location: Surry Hills, Sydney
Work arrangement: Hybrid - 2-3 days per week in the office
Contract: 6 months, with potential extension
Start: ASAP

Our client is looking for a Senior Observability Engineer to join their technology team and help design, scale and improve observability across a large and complex environment.

This is a hands-on senior engineering role focused on observability, monitoring, automation and reliability. You will work closely with engineering, operations and AiOps teams to improve telemetry, system visibility and the reliability of critical services.

Key responsibilities

• Design and scale enterprise observability and telemetry platforms.
• Develop and maintain monitoring, logging and tracing standards across applications and infrastructure.
• Work with Dynatrace, Datadog, OpenTelemetry and PagerDuty.
• Design and implement SLOs and SLIs with application and engineering teams.
• Build and improve telemetry ingestion pipelines, ensuring high availability and data quality.
• Use Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD to automate observability and monitoring.
• Develop automation, integrations and custom tooling using Python or similar.
• Support observability across cloud and Kubernetes environments.
• Identify opportunities to optimise telemetry data, storage and licensing costs.
• Create dashboards and insights that help teams understand system health and take action.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to other Observability Engineers.
• Act as a technical escalation point for complex observability and monitoring issues.

About you

You will have strong experience in Observability, SRE, DevOps or a similar engineering environment, with a proven track record working with large-scale and distributed systems.

• 5+ years' experience in Observability, SRE or DevOps engineering.
• Strong hands‑on experience with Dynatrace, Datadog or similar APM/observability platforms.
• Strong knowledge of OpenTelemetry, metrics, logs and distributed tracing.
• Experience designing and scaling telemetry pipelines.
• Strong IaC and automation skills, such as Terraform.
• Experience with CI/CD and monitoring-as-code.
• Strong Python or similar scripting/programming experience.
• Experience with Azure or GCP cloud environments.
• Strong Kubernetes experience, particularly around monitoring and telemetry.
• Experience defining and implementing SLOs and SLIs.
• Strong understanding of system reliability, availability and performance.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with engineering and technical stakeholders.
