Job summary

Broken Hill Mines in Broken Hill, NSW seeks a Senior Metallurgist to join the Processing team. You will coordinate metallurgical activities, optimise plant performance and drive continuous improvement in a dynamic mining environment.

Reporting to the Processing Manager, you will support planning, accounting and test work, while mentoring laboratory staff and collaborating with external partners. This permanent full-time role offers a competitive salary and relocation support.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing or related discipline.
• At least 4 years' experience in base metals mineral processing.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
• Current Australian Driver Licence or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and support metallurgical activities across the processing plant.
• Focus on metallurgical performance, accounting, optimisation and continuous improvement.
• Review plant performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Assist with daily/monthly metallurgical accounting.
• Develop and coordinate metallurgical test work.
• Examine metallurgical methods and equipment to optimise plant performance.
• Monitor reagent and consumable usage and costs.
• Contribute to monthly production forecasting and budgeting.
• Liaise with consultants, laboratories, government organisations and external stakeholders.
• Supervise, train and mentor laboratory and graduate personnel.

Broken Hill Mines is seeking an experienced Senior Metallurgist to join our Processing team based in Broken Hill, NSW.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in supporting metallurgical operations, improving plant performance and delivering continuous improvement initiatives within a dynamic mining environment.

About the Role

Reporting to the Processing Manager, you will be responsible for coordinating and supporting metallurgical activities across the processing plant, with a focus on metallurgical performance, accounting, optimisation and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Supporting medium and long-term planning of processing activities


• Reviewing plant performance and identifying opportunities for improvement


• Assisting with daily and monthly metallurgical accounting


• Developing and coordinating metallurgical test work


• Examining metallurgical methods and equipment to optimise plant performance


• Monitoring reagent and consumable usage and costs


• Contributing to monthly production forecasting and departmental budgeting


• Liaising with consultants, laboratories, government organisations and other external stakeholders


• Supervising, training and mentoring laboratory and graduate personnel


• Promoting collaboration across departments and a strong culture of safety and best practice

About you

• A tertiary qualification in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing or a related discipline


• At least 4 years' experience in base metals mineral processing


• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills


• Experience with metallurgical accounting and plant performance analysis


• A proactive approach to continuous improvement


• Strong organisational and time management skills


• The ability to identify hazards and undertake risk assessments


• A strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards


• Advanced Microsoft Office 365 skills


• A current Australian Driver Licence or equivalent

About Broken Hill Mines

The Rasp Mine is an operating silver-lead-zinc mine in Broken Hill, with a large Mineral Resource and a 750,000tpa processing plant. The mine has operated for over 120 years, producing zinc and lead concentrates sold globally. The Pinnacles Mine, situated 15km southwest of Broken Hill, is known for containing one of the area's highest-grade and shallowest silver-zinc-lead deposits. Despite being largely undeveloped, small-scale historical mining has occurred over the past 120 years.
