Role Purpose

In this role, you will design, build and maintain scalable data pipelines and architectures to support advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives. You will lead the integration of data sources, optimise ETL processes, and ensure the quality and reliability of data across the organisation.

As a senior member of the team, you will provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate closely with architects, analysts and business stakeholders to deliver data-driven solutions that enable informed decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable data pipelines for large-scale data ingestion, transformation, and delivery
• Integrate diverse data sources to create unified, accessible datasets for analytics and business insights
• Architect and implement robust data engineering solutions that are secure, efficient and maintainable
• Automate data workflows using modern tools and scripting languages (e.g. Python, APIs)
• Monitor performance of data systems, identify inefficiencies, and implement enhancements
• Ensure adherence to best practices in data quality, governance, security, and regulatory compliance
• Provide technical leadership through code reviews, mentoring, and architectural guidance
• Evaluate and adopt new tools or frameworks to continuously improve data engineering capabilities
• Work closely with stakeholders to understand data needs and translate them into technical solutions
  
  

Qualifications and Experience

This role typically requires a tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related field, along with over 10 years of hands-on experience in data engineering, analytics, and machine learning environments.

• Strong programming skills in Python and SQL
• Proficient in designing and managing ETL/ELT processes across multiple systems
• Solid understanding of data modelling and database architecture
• Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure preferred), including Azure Data Factory
• Proficiency in using Snowflake or similar modern data warehousing platforms
• Experience working with Git or similar version control systems
• Demonstrated ability to work with both technical and non-technical staff with clarity and empathy
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Proven experience automating development and support processes
• Ability to navigate complex organisations and influence without direct authority
  
  

Desirable

• Ability to apply Python/R/Predictive Analytics (Machine Learning, Statistics)
• Familiarity with data sharing, performance tuning, and schema design in Snowflake
• Knowledge of data product design to meet the needs of staff delivering community services and customer care
