Job summary

St Michael's School, Gordonvale, part of Catholic Education, Cairns, seeks a School Counsellor to support student mental health and resilience. Commencement 18 January 2027; 3 days per week; salary $123,709–$131,629 FTE gross per annum (pro-rata). Closing 15 November 2026.

The role partners with school staff to provide guidance through direct and indirect interventions, focusing on equitable access and outcomes for all students.

Qualifications

• Formal qualifications at Degree level in Education Psychology or Social Work
• Registration requirements: QCT for Teachers; Working with Children Blue Card for non-teachers
• Guidance Counsellors must have QCT registration and QGCA membership or Psychology Board of Australia/AASW
• Non-Teacher Counsellors require AHPRA registration or AASW membership

Responsibilities

• Foster development, mental health and resilience of all students including at-risk and those with special needs; apply guidance and counselling through direct/indirect processes and systemic/individual interventions
• Practice as a certified professional in partnership with the school, contributing specialised knowledge and skills in a collaborative manner
