Job summary

Sydney Earthworks is seeking a hands-on Safety & Compliance Officer with civil and earthworks experience to support safety systems across multiple sites in Sydney. You will work on-site and in the office, coordinating inspections, audits and documentation.

You will monitor plant operations, manage SWMS/JSA, risk assessments, and contractor compliance, and lead incident investigations and continuous improvement actions.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in civil construction / earthworks.
• Experience with ISO management systems, preferably ISO 45001 and/or ISO 9001.
• Strong administration and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain WHS and compliance systems across civil and earthworks projects.
• Conduct regular site inspections, audits and compliance checks.
• Monitor safety and compliance relating to excavators, dump trucks, water carts, loaders, graders, rollers and other civil plant.
• Maintain plant and machinery compliance records, inspections and documentation.
• Coordinate SWMS, JSA/JHA, risk assessments and other safety documentation.
• Monitor operator qualifications, licences, competencies and required documentation.
• Manage contractor and subcontractor compliance.
• Investigate incidents and assist with corrective and preventative actions.
• Maintain safety, plant and compliance registers.
• Prepare documentation for project prequalification and client requirements.
• Upload plant, machinery and company compliance documentation to external project portals.
• Assist with internal and external audits.
• Ensure project documentation remains current and compliant.
• Work closely with project managers, supervisors, operators and management to maintain site compliance.

Safety & Compliance Officer – Civil / Earthworks

Location: Various locations across Sydney | On-site & Office Based

We are seeking an experienced Safety & Compliance Officer with a strong background in civil construction and earthworks to join our team.

This is a hands‑on role suited to someone who understands the day‑to‑day operations of civil and earthworks projects, heavy machinery, operators, subcontractors and site compliance.

About the Role

Working across various civil and earthworks projects throughout Sydney, you will be responsible for supporting and maintaining our safety, compliance and project documentation systems.

The role will involve a combination of site-based and office-based work.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain WHS and compliance systems across civil and earthworks projects

About You

The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience within civil construction and/or earthworks and understand how a busy civil site operates.

You will have:

• Proven experience in civil construction / earthworks
• Strong understanding of civil plant, heavy machinery and site operations
• Previous experience in a safety, compliance or WHS role within the civil industry
• Experience working with plant and machinery compliance
• Experience with ISO management systems, preferably ISO 45001 and/or ISO 9001
• Experience conducting site inspections, audits and risk assessments
• Strong knowledge of WHS requirements relevant to civil construction
• Experience managing subcontractor and contractor compliance
• Strong administration and documentation skills
• Excellent attention to detail and organisation
• Ability to work between site and office environments
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with site crews and management

The Right Person

We are looking for someone who understands civil and earthworks from the ground up — someone comfortable walking a site, talking with operators and supervisors, checking machinery and documentation, identifying compliance issues and following them through to resolution.

This is not purely an office-based compliance position. Civil/earthworks industry experience is highly valued.

Salary: $90,000 – $100,000 + super, depending on experience.
