Job summary

Amentum is seeking an experienced Safety & Certification Engineer to support a major Defence capability program in Australia. You will lead safety, certification, risk and assurance activities across the capability lifecycle, collaborating with Defence stakeholders, regulators, OEMs and industry partners to ensure compliance and readiness for operation.

Tell me about this role:

We are seeking an experienced Safety & Certification Engineer to support a major Defence capability program and ensure systems are delivered safely, compliantly, and ready for operational use.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will lead safety and certification activities across the capability lifecycle, engaging with Defence stakeholders, regulators, industry partners, and technical authorities to develop robust assurance and certification outcomes.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a complex, high-profile Defence project while applying your expertise in systems safety, risk management, certification, and regulatory compliance.

What will I be doing day to day?
  • Develop and maintain safety and certification plans, strategies, and supporting documentation.
  • Identify and analyse safety, certification, and regulatory requirements for complex Defence systems.
  • Manage certification activities and track evidence required for approvals and compliance.
  • Conduct hazard identification, risk assessments, and safety assurance activities.
  • Develop and maintain certification, compliance, and risk registers.
  • Support the creation of safety cases and assurance artefacts for Defence approval processes.

  • Assess certification pathways and recommend approaches to achieve regulatory compliance.
  • Review technical documentation and evaluate system compliance against applicable standards and requirements.
  • Support capability acquisition, testing, introduction into service, and ongoing certification activities.
  • Provide expert advice on safety, assurance, and certification risks to project stakeholders.
  • Contribute to governance, reporting, and decision-making forums relating to safety and certification.
What sort of skills do I need?
  • Engineering degree or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Experience in safety engineering, certification, systems assurance, or regulatory compliance within complex and highly regulated environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Defence certification, assurance, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience developing safety cases, certification plans, compliance documentation, approval artefacts, and technical reports.
  • Strong understanding of risk management, hazard analysis, safety assurance methodologies, and the conduct of risk assessments.
  • Experience supporting Defence acquisition, integration, testing, certification, sustainment, or introduction into service activities.
  • Experience working within Defence, aerospace, maritime, land systems, weapon systems, or other complex engineering environments.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements, engineering standards, and regulatory obligations.
  • Current NV1 Security Clearance (minimum) or the ability to obtain one. NV2 clearance will be highly regarded.
