Job summary

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) is seeking a Risk and Controls Officer to deliver key operational activities within the enterprise risk management framework, including risk assurance and controls testing, while building capability across SCS.

The role requires translating strategic objectives into practical risk solutions, engaging stakeholders from principals to central offices, and helping safeguard compliance.

Qualifications

• A tertiary qualification in Risk Management, Accounting, Business, Law or Education.
• 6+ years in operational or assurance roles with controls testing.
• Strong knowledge of AS/ISO 31000 and COSO in not-for-profit/education sectors.
• Advanced capability with risk systems (GRC platforms) and data analytics for reporting.

Responsibilities

• Stakeholder engagement with principals, school leaders and central office teams.
• Implement and maintain the risk framework, supporting RCSA cycles, KRIs and assurance activities.
• Develop test plans, conduct process and control reviews, report findings.
• Deliver learning modules and communications to strengthen risk practice.
• Maintain risk data in the risk platform and produce leadership reports.

About the Role

The Risk and Controls Officer delivers key operational activities within the enterprise risk management framework, including risk assurance and controls testing, while also building operational capability across SCS by leading training and communication initiatives that help risk owners confidently apply risk concepts and practices in their work.

We are seeking a candidate with strong professional capability, sound judgement and the ability to translate strategic objectives into practical risk management solutions.

Key responsibilities include:

• stakeholder engagement - partnering with principals, school leaders and central office teams, and contributing expertise to safeguarding, assurance and compliance initiatives
• enterprise risk support - implementing and maintaining the risk framework, supporting RCSA cycles, KRIs and assurance activities
• assurance and controls testing - developing test plans, conducting process and control reviews, and preparing clear, structured findings
• capability building and training - developing and delivering learning modules, resources and communications to strengthen risk practice across SCS
• risk systems and reporting - maintaining high-quality data in the SCS risk platform, managing queries, and producing risk reports for leadership and committees
• monitoring key metrics - tracking risk appetite, tolerances and indicators, and escalating emerging issues.

About You

You'll be comfortable navigating a complex organisational environment and influencing a variety of stakeholders to deliver positive risk and business outcomes.

Together with your operational experiences, you will bring:

• a tertiary qualification in Risk Management, Accounting, Business, Law, Education or a related field
• proven enterprise risk experience with a minimum of 6 years in operational or assurance roles, including controls testing
• a strong knowledge of Australian risk standards such as AS/ISO 31000 and COSO, ideally within not-for-profit, education or Catholic sectors
• advanced capability with risk systems including GRC platforms and data analytics for reporting
• demonstrated professional integrity with independence, objectivity and strong ethical standards
• exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
• experience in delivering professional learning across face-to-face, virtual and eLearning formats
• a willingness to respect, support, and uphold the mission, ethos, and teachings of the Catholic Church and the values of SCS.
• post-graduate professional credentials such as Certified Practising Risk Manager or Certified Internal Auditor (or equivalent)
• strong data analysis capability with experience using tools like Excel, Power BI or Tableau and data modelling highly regarded
• current driver's licence and access to a car
• understanding of Australian schooling systems, particularly NSW and Catholic education contexts
• practising Catholic with demonstrated commitment to the teachings of the Church and active engagement in a Catholic faith community.
