Job summary

McCosker Contracting in Gladstone, Queensland is seeking a Project Accountant to partner with operations and project teams. You will oversee financial reporting, cost control, forecasting, and revenue recognition across multiple projects in a fast-paced construction environment.

The role requires tertiary qualifications in business or accounting, at least 3 years in project accounting, with strong Excel and Power BI skills and a commercial mindset. Permanent, full-time, 40 hours per week.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in Business, Commerce, Accounting or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in project accounting or similar.
• Proficient in project accounting and reporting.
• Experience within construction, civil contracting, mining services, engineering, or project-based industries.
• Advanced MS Office, in particular Excel and Power BI.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and analyse monthly project financial reports and performance dashboards.
• Monitor project costs, revenue, margins, cash flow and work-in-progress.
• Support budgeting, forecasting and cost control with project managers.
• Review project commitments, subcontractor costs and procurement spend.
• Assist with contract administration, variations, claims and revenue recognition.
• Reconcile project accounting records and investigate variances.
• Prepare accruals, journals and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Partner with operations to identify financial risks and opportunities.
• Support project start-up, close-out and audit requirements.
• Assist system and process improvement for project management and reporting.
• Ensure compliance with company policies and accounting standards.

About the Role:

The Project Accountant will act as a critical business partner to operational and project management teams, providing financial oversight, analysis, and reporting across multiple projects. This position will ensure accurate project cost control, forecasting, revenue recognition, and commercial reporting while supporting informed decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.

The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced construction environment and possess strong commercial acumen, attention to detail, and relationship-building skills.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Prepare and analyse monthly project financial reports and performance dashboards.
• Monitor project costs, revenue, margins, cash flow, and work-in-progress.
• Support project managers with budgeting, forecasting, and cost control processes.
• Review project commitments, subcontractor costs, and procurement spend.
• Assist with contract administration, variations, claims, and revenue recognition.
• Reconcile project accounting records and investigate financial variances.
• Prepare monthly accruals, journals, and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Partner with operational teams to identify financial risks and opportunities.
• Support project start-up, close-out, and audit requirements.
• Assist with the system and process improvement projects around project management and reporting.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and contractual obligations.

Candidate Requirements:

• High accuracy, attention to detail and problem‑solving skills
• Tertiary qualifications in Business, Commerce, Accounting or equivalent
• Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar role
• Proficient in project accounting and reporting
• Experience within construction, civil contracting, mining services, engineering, or project‑based industries.
• Advance MS Office skills, in particular Excel and Power BI
• Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to influence operational teams and challenge outcomes constructively.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.

The below attributes would be highly desirable:

• CPA/CA Qualifications
• Construction industry experience

• Gain an understanding of the current state of project tracking and reporting.
• Build relationships with Project teams and develop a financial and operational understanding of current construction projects.
• Work with system improvement teams to help map out a path to better system utilisation and project reporting.
• Implement a long‑term and sustainable implementation of system improvements and enhance reporting capabilities.
