Job summary

Recruitment Hive is assisting an independent statutory agency in Sydney to appoint a Principal Software Engineer who will lead the design, deployment and support of cloud and data infrastructure. The role requires driving DevOps pipelines, IaC with Terraform, and container orchestration with Docker and Kubernetes.

You will engage stakeholders to define requirements, set priorities, and deliver results within an agile framework, while expanding multi-cloud capabilities across AWS and Azure.

Qualifications

• Extensive hands-on AWS cloud architecture experience.
• Proven ability to design, implement, and manage scalable cloud solutions.
• Experience with Terraform IaC and DevOps pipelines.
• Proficiency with Git and agile development methods.
• Leadership in agile teams and strong stakeholder engagement.
• Containerization with Docker and orchestration via Kubernetes.
• Database administration for Postgres and MySQL.
• Azure administration and multi-cloud expansion with AWS.
• Strong networking design and troubleshooting in cloud environments.
• Secret management using HashiCorp Vault.

Our client, an independent statutory agency supporting hundreds of thousands of Australians with significant and permanent disability, is seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer.

Duties of the Principal Software Engineer

• Leading the design, development, deployment, and support of the Agency’s Cloud & Data Infrastructure;
• Prioritising and managing the work queue to ensure timely delivery of key initiatives;
• Ensuring that all solutions adhere to integration best practices;
• Playing a key leadership role in project teams, utilising an agile development framework;
• Engaging with stakeholders to define project requirements, set priorities, and deliver results.

Skills and Experience Required

• Extensive hands‑on experience with AWS infrastructure and services, with proven ability to design, implement, and manage scalable cloud solutions;
• Strong experience in building and deploying DevOps practices, tools, and continuous delivery pipelines to streamline development workflows;
• Expertise in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform;
• Proficiency with version control systems, combined with a solid understanding of agile development methodologiest;
• In‑depth experience with containerisation, cluster deployment, and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, ensuring efficient application delivery and management.
• Experience with database deployment and administration, particularly with Postgres and MySQL, for efficient data management and performance optimisation;
• Proficiency in administering Azure infrastructure, expanding multi‑cloud capabilities alongside AWS;
• Strong understanding of networking, including designing, managing, and troubleshooting network configurations in cloud environments;
• Familiarity with HashiCorp Vault for securing sensitive data and managing secrets across cloud infrastructure.
