Job summary

PERSOL Australia is seeking an experienced Portfolio Management professional for a Sustaining Capital Projects team within a major mining operation in Australia. You will oversee a portfolio from inception through to handover, managing approximately $20M-$40M in annual spend and leading a team of about six direct reports.

The role requires Tier 1 client-side mining experience, an engineering degree, and strong capital budgeting and financial management capabilities.

We are currently seeking an experienced Portfolio Management professional to join a Sustaining Capital Projects team within a major mining operation.

This is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing a portfolio of sustaining capital projects from inception through to execution, commissioning and handover, with responsibility for approximately $20M-$40M in annual project spend.

The successful candidate will be a proactive, high-energy project professional with strong commercial awareness, excellent leadership capability and a genuine ownership mentality toward project delivery.

Previous Tier 1 client-side mining experience is mandatory for this position.

The Opportunity Reporting directly to the Superintendent - Sustaining Capital Projects, you will provide leadership across project delivery, portfolio performance, financial management and team development.

You will manage approximately six direct reports and maintain oversight of project performance, expenditure, risk and delivery across the portfolio.

A major focus will be ensuring monthly project expenditure aligns with annual capital budgets, identifying risks early and proactively managing project timing and expenditure to achieve financial year targets.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of sustaining capital projects across the full lifecycle from inception through to handover
• Lead, mentor and manage approximately six direct reports
• Oversee approximately $20M-$40M in annual capital expenditure
• Manage portfolio budgets, forecasts, commitments and monthly expenditure
• Balance monthly portfolio spend against annual financial year targets
• Identify potential underspend or overspend early and implement corrective actions
• Bring expenditure forward or defer project spend where appropriate to optimise annual portfolio performance
• Maintain accurate forecasting and provide clear visibility of portfolio performance
• Present project submissions, updates and recommendations to site Investment Committees on behalf of Project Managers
• Provide governance and oversight across project scope, cost, schedule, risk and execution
• Support Project Managers and Project Engineers with complex delivery issues
• Drive a strong safety, accountability and performance culture across the team
• Identify project and portfolio risks early and proactively drive mitigation strategies
• Support commissioning, operational readiness and project handover
• Act as a senior escalation point within the Sustaining Capital Projects team

About You

• Tier 1 client-side mining experience is mandatory
• Engineering degree or relevant tertiary qualification
• Strong experience within mining capital and sustaining capital projects
• Strong understanding of the complete capital project lifecycle from inception through to handover
• Proven experience managing a portfolio of multiple concurrent projects
• Strong capital budgeting, forecasting and financial management capability
• Experience managing significant annual project or portfolio expenditure
• Proven experience presenting to Investment Committees and senior site leadership
• Demonstrated experience leading and developing project teams
• Strong understanding of project governance, risk and commercial management
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
• Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making capability
• Highly proactive with the ability to identify issues before they impact delivery
• Strong accountability and willingness to take ownership of portfolio outcomes
• High energy, positive attitude and a proactive approach are critical to success in this role
