Job summary

Responsibilities

• Lead operational management of a 24/7 mission-critical platform environment including compute, storage, virtualization, backup, and Linux systems.
• Provide technical and people leadership over Linux systems support and infrastructure engineering.
• Maintain platform availability through incident management, on-call leadership, and escalation for complex issues.
• Own end-to-end operational accountability for platform services across in-house teams and MSPs.
• Contribute to governance and service level management; oversee platform health, capacity, performance, and security per ISM.
• Collaborate across cloud, connectivity, HPC, and application teams to support integrated service delivery.
• Ensure lifecycle management of platform assets including patching, upgrades, and refresh.
• Manage vendor relationships, procurement, and contract management; oversee operational budget.
• Participate in Change Advisory Board and apply ITIL practices to drive maturity.

Job description

The role is responsible for leading the operational management of a 24/7 mission-critical platform environment, encompassing compute, storage, virtualisation, backup, and Linux systems. It ensures the delivery of reliable, secure, and high-performing infrastructure services aligned to agreed service levels and organisational priorities.

Providing both technical and people leadership, the position oversees a multi-disciplinary team across Linux systems support and infrastructure engineering, fostering a high-performing, accountable, and responsive operational culture. It plays a key role in maintaining platform availability through effective incident management, on-call leadership, and acting as an escalation point for complex and high-impact issues.

The role holds end-to-end operational accountability for platform services delivered across both in-house teams and Managed Service Partners, ensuring visibility, alignment with technical standards, and adherence to service expectations. It contributes to governance and service level management while maintaining strong oversight of platform health, capacity, performance, and security compliance in line with the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM) and relevant frameworks.

Working collaboratively across cloud, connectivity, HPC and application teams, the position supports integrated service delivery and the successful coordination of project and program resources. It also ensures effective lifecycle management of platform assets, including patching, upgrades, and refresh activities, to maintain currency and mitigate risk.

The role maintains strong vendor relationships, contributes to procurement and contract management activities, and manages a significant operational budget to ensure sustainable and efficient service delivery. Through participation in governance forums such as Change Advisory Board (CAB), and the application of ITIL-aligned service management practices, the position drives operational discipline, continuous improvement, and the ongoing maturity of platform services.
