Job summary

Macmahon is seeking an Open Cut Examiner at Byerwen to ensure safety and statutory compliance across surface mining activities. Reporting to the Production Superintendent, you will contribute to incident investigations, risk assessments and daily pre-start checks.

The role requires an Open Cut Examiner's Certificate of Competency, proven leadership of large-scale surface mining operations, and strong knowledge of mine planning, safety acts, and stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Play an active role in incident investigations, identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Assist in developing, reviewing and auditing the SHMS relating to mining activities.
• Lead, coach and develop team members; set clear expectations and monitor performance.
• Provide clear performance expectations to personnel and subcontractors and enforce safety procedures.
• Liaise with Mining Supervisors and People & Capability on safety, compliance and production issues.
• Participate in daily pre-start meetings and inspect mining activities to ensure acceptable risk levels.

About the Role

Reporting to the Production Superintendent, As an Open Cut Examiner at Byerwen, you will ensure the health and safety of persons in and around the surface excavation during the mining activities in or around the surface excavation and to ensure statutory compliance.

Responsibilities

• Play an active role in incident investigations, identify root causes, ensure required documentation is completed, and implement corrective actions where applicable.
• Assist in developing, reviewing and auditing the SHMS relating to mining activities in and around the mine excavation.
• Lead, coach and develop team members by setting clear expectations, monitoring performance and mentoring employees.
• Provide clear performance expectations to personnel and subcontractors, reinforcing correct behaviours through recognition, encouragement and timely disciplinary procedures.
• Liaise with Mining Supervisors and People & Capability to address employee relations, safety, compliance and production issues promptly.
• Participate in daily pre-start meetings, inspect and audit mining activities, personnel and equipment to ensure acceptable risk levels and authorised operating practices, while championing a culture of safety, integrity, continuous improvement, operational excellence and respect.

What You'll Bring

• Open Cut Examiner's Certificate of Competency for Surface Coal Mines, with proven experience as an OCE in an open-cut mining environment.
• Demonstrated leadership capability and experience managing large-scale surface mining operations and Production Supervisors.
• Ability to build trust, set standards and make clear decisions.Coal Mining Industry Competencies: RIIRIS301, RIICOM301B, RIIOHS301A and RIIRIS402A.
• Strong knowledge of mine planning, production execution, fleet management, and the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 (QLD).
• Excellent stakeholder management skills and a results-driven focus on operational performance, continuous improvement and people development.
