Job summary

SBS is seeking a dedicated News Digital Editor / Journalist on a casual roster in Sydney to create and edit written content for SBS News' digital platforms. This role blends reporting and digital editing across mornings, evenings, day shifts and weekends with a roster that spans seven days.

You will pitch, write, edit, and curate stories, collaborating with cross-functional teams, using data analytics to guide decisions and ensuring editorial integrity across all platforms.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience as a digital editor and journalist for news titles.
  • Confident and creative writer with a strong eye for detail and audience angles.
  • Ability to manage priorities in breaking news environments.
  • Understanding of media law, flawless subbing, and strong headline writing skills.
  • Experience with digital platforms, SEO, and writing for digital audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Rostered into a mix of digital editor and reporting shifts.
  • Cover the biggest international and national news stories with strong news judgment.
  • Pitch and write daily and breaking news content, explainers and features.
  • In digital editor shifts, select and commission daily news stories and curate the SBS News website.

News Digital Editor / Journalist - Casual

This role is classified as Level 3 role under SBS Australia's current Enterprise Agreement with a casual hourly rate of $57.43 - $62.16 (inclusive of 24% casual loading). The successful applicant will be offered remuneration that is commensurate with their skills and experienceand in alignment with this framework.

The role has shifts available across mornings, evenings, day shifts and weekends. Ideally you will be available to work across a 7 day week roster.

As a rostered shiftworker, additional shift penalty payments may apply for work performed outside of ordinary hours, including weekends and public holidays, as per the SBS Enterprise Agreement (EA). SBS may also require you to work reasonable overtime, where overtime will be paid at applicable rates in accordance with the EA. Shift patterns may change over time depending on operational needs.

The Role

We are looking for a dedicated and skilled reporter and editor to join the team on a casual rotating roster to create and edit written content for SBS News' Digital platforms.

This role will see you:

  • Rostered into a mix of digital editor and reporting shifts
  • Playing an active role in covering the biggest international and national news stories of the moment
  • During reporting shifts, you’ll be pitching and writing original content, including daily and breaking news coverage, explainers and features
  • In digital editor shifts you’ll be selecting and commissioning daily news stories, guiding journalists cover the most critical stories of the day, covering breaking news and live blogs, curating the SBS News website and optimising content
  • Conducting thorough news gathering with a strong awareness of trends, national and international news
  • Commissioning visually rich assets to complement stories, and bringing forward ideas for innovative coverage
  • Sending app alerts, optimising content and subbing content where required
  • Using data and analytics tools to help inform editorial choices
  • Collaborate with members of the broader SBS News team (including TV, Audio, Digital Video and Social teams) to help make the most of our newsgathering and newsroom skills in daily coverage

About you

Ideally, you will:

  • Be a confident and creative writer with a strong eye for detail and the angles that matter to our audience
  • Have a keen interest in news, and ability to manage priorities in breaking news environments
  • Have an understanding of media law, flawless subbing, and strong headline writing skills
  • Be committed to maintaining our editorial integrity and maximising our publishing reach
  • Have demonstrated experience as a digital editor and journalist for news titles
  • Have demonstrated digital skills, including SEO, headline writing and writing for digital audiences

You should also bring:

  • A keen interest in what’s happening in the world to develop storytelling in new and innovative ways to reach and engage wider audiences.
  • A strong understanding and knowledge of national and international affairs
  • A passion for providing news for all Australians
  • A hunger to understand and share new developments and trends in journalism and digital media
  • News happens around the clock and you should be willing and able to undertake hours that may involve early mornings, evenings and weekends
