Qualifications

• Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade / Fitting & Turning.
• Experience as Mechanical Fitter or Fitter & Turner is desirable.
• Strong ability to read engineering drawings and interpret specs.
• Proficient in manual lathes, mills and drills.
• Commitment to safety and quality in workshop environment.

Responsibilities

Our client is a growing Australian technology and engineering business based in Ballarat, Victoria, delivering innovative equipment and engineered solutions across the agriculture, grain handling and manufacturing sectors. With strong ties to the agricultural industry, their work combines engineering, fabrication and practical technology to develop equipment that improves the efficiency, performance and reliability of customer operations.

As the business continues to grow, they’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Fitter & Machinist to join their fabrication team. This is a hands-on role where you’ll work closely with the engineering and manufacturing teams, contribute your technical knowledge and help turn engineering designs into quality finished equipment.

About the role

The projects & equipment You’ll work across a range of agricultural and grain processing projects, working with equipment such as:

• Conveyors and bucket elevators
• Seed coaters
• Dryers and coolers
• Grain cleaning equipment
• Optical sorting systems
• Dust collection systems
• Mixers and blending equipment
• Batch weighing systems
• Chemical and feed systems
• Screening equipment
• Pneumatic conveying systems
• Storage and material handling systems
• Automated processing equipment

Projects can include complete seed processing facilities, seed treatment and packaging lines, grain cleaning systems, drying plants, fertiliser processing, pulse packing and other custom-engineered processing solutions.

This is a genuinely hands-on role where you’ll see your work progress from engineering drawings and individual components through machining, fitting and assembly to completed machinery ready for installation and operation.

You’ll be involved in a variety of fitting and machining work, working from engineering drawings and project specifications to fabricate, assemble and finish mechanical components and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Fitting and assembling fabricated components to build machines and equipment
• Reading and accurately interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints and scopes of work
• Machining components using manual lathes, mills and drills
• Using a range of mechanical tools and workshop equipment
• Identifying machining or fitting issues and finding practical solutions
• Working closely with the engineering team to provide technical input and advice
• Troubleshooting and resolving mechanical issues during fabrication and assembly
• Ensuring work is completed to required quality and safety standards
• Completing quality control documentation and reporting variations or discrepancies
• Planning and managing your workload to keep projects moving and meet deadlines
• Supporting continuous improvement across workshop processes
• Providing guidance and mentoring to apprentices and less experienced team members
• Undertaking training in CNC lathe and 5-axis milling as required

This isn’t simply a workshop role where you’ll be working on the same equipment every day. You’ll be involved in varied engineering projects and custom machinery, with the opportunity to use your practical trade skills and have input into how equipment is built and improved.

You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, fabricators and manufacturing specialists and have the opportunity to develop your machining capabilities as the business continues to grow.

About you

We’re looking for someone who is technically capable, hands‑on and enjoys solving problems.

You’ll ideally have:

• Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade / Fitting & Turning
• Previous experience as a Mechanical Fitter, Fitter & Turner or similar
• Strong mechanical fitting and assembly skills
• Experience with manual lathes, mills and drills
• Ability to accurately read and interpret engineering drawings
• Good understanding of mechanical tools, machinery and workshop practices
• Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills
• A proactive approach and willingness to suggest improvements
• Good organisational skills and the ability to work to project deadlines
• Strong commitment to safety and quality
• Ability to work collaboratively with engineering and manufacturing teams

Agriculture, grain handling, manufacturing or industrial equipment experience would be highly regarded.
