Job summary

MIGAS Apprentices and Trainees – Sunshine VIC is seeking a trade-qualified Mechanical Maintenance Technician / Fitter to join the afternoon-shift maintenance team at their onsite steel-processing facility.

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, you will perform preventative and breakdown maintenance across conveyors, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, gearboxes and pumps, with welding and fabrication as required.

Qualifications

• Trade-qualified mechanical maintenance experience in manufacturing or heavy industry.
• Experience with preventative and breakdown maintenance and fault-finding in complex machinery.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and maintenance instructions.
• Current driver licence and commitment to safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Complete planned preventative maintenance and inspections on conveyors, machinery and material-handling equipment.
• Respond to breakdowns, diagnose faults and repair or replace components to minimise downtime.
• Perform MIG and stick welding, fabrication and repairs to guards, frames and machine parts.
• Assist with equipment upgrades, installations and shutdown maintenance as required.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and participate in continuous improvement.

Qualified Mechanical Maintenance Technician

MIGAS Apprentices and Trainees – Sunshine VIC

On behalf of our client, we are seeking a trade-qualified Mechanical Maintenance Technician / Fitter to join the afternoon-shift maintenance team at their onsite steel-processing facility.

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, you will carry out preventative and breakdown maintenance, mechanical fault-finding, repairs, welding and fabrication across production machinery and material-handling equipment. Significant amounts of new machinery have been installed at the site recently.

This is a hands‑on role working with conveyors, roller systems, rebar cutting and bending machines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, gearboxes, pumps, motors, overhead cranes and mobile equipment. You will help maintain safe, reliable production while working independently and coordinating closely with operators, supervisors, electricians and the day‑shift maintenance team.

The role is open to Australian or New Zealand citizens only.

Hours are suited to work/life balance, generally running from 2pm to 10pm Monday to Friday, with overtime available and paid at overtime rates.

Pay rate ranging from $52 to $60 per hour, plus 15% afternoon shift loading, 12% superannuation, bonus and overtime, with potential to grow income as experience develops.

• Complete planned preventative maintenance, including inspections, lubrication, servicing and replacement of worn bearings, chains, sprockets, rollers, belts and other components.
• Respond promptly to production breakdowns, diagnose mechanical faults, repair or replace failed parts, test equipment and minimise downtime.
• Fault‑find conveyors, roller systems, rebar cutting and bending machines, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, gearboxes, drive systems, pumps, motors and material‑handling equipment.
• Perform MIG and stick welding, fabrication and repairs to guards, brackets, frames, machine components and damaged steel structures.
• Assist with equipment upgrades, installations, shutdown work and reliability improvements, including support for electricians where required.
• Complete routine plant inspections, monitor critical equipment performance and identify recurring issues through root‑cause analysis.
• Follow isolation and Lock Out Tag Out procedures, risk assessments, permits, PPE requirements and safe work instructions while working around overhead cranes, mobile equipment, high‑speed stirrup‑bending machines and large shearing machinery.
• Attend pre‑start and toolbox meetings, review day‑shift handover information, prioritise urgent work and provide clear end‑of‑shift handover notes.
• Maintain clean, safe work areas and communicate equipment status clearly to operators and supervisors.

About You

The successful candidate will bring strong industrial mechanical maintenance experience, practical fault‑finding capability and a commitment to safe, high‑quality workmanship.

You will be safety‑conscious, reliable, proactive and calm under pressure, with the ability to work independently on afternoon shift while remaining a collaborative and clear communicator. Strong attention to detail, sound judgement and a continuous‑improvement mindset are essential.

You will bring:

• Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade, or an equivalent recognised mechanical trade qualification
• Demonstrated experience in preventative and breakdown maintenance within manufacturing, steel processing, heavy industry or a similar environment
• Strong mechanical fault‑finding and problem‑solving skills
• Practical knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, bearings, chains, gearboxes, pumps, motors and drive systems
• MIG and stick welding, fabrication and general workshop repair experience (Weld test will be required)
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, maintenance instructions and equipment documentation
• Experience using standard workshop, mechanical fitting and welding equipment
• Ability to complete maintenance records and use a computerised maintenance management system
• Current driver licence
• High regard for safety, isolation procedures, quality and continuous improvement

Advantageous and Highly Regarded –

Licences and tickets – High Risk Work Licence, forklift licence, EWP, dogging or crane‑related tickets, and current first aid qualifications.

Experience with rebar processing machinery, overhead cranes, mobile equipment, CMMS platforms such as MAINPAC, shutdown maintenance, equipment installation and Microsoft Office/report writing.
