Job summary

Mayday Technical in Sydney's Ingleburn region is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to lead overhead-crane and materials-handling system design. The role spans from customer specifications to fabrication and commissioning, integrating with experienced engineers and manufacturing teams.

You will design complete crane systems, perform robust calculations, and use 3D CAD tools (Inventor, AutoCAD) with a focus on practical, safety-conscious engineering.

Qualifications

• A degree in Mechanical, Mechatronic or related engineering field.
• At least five years of direct overhead-crane design experience.
• Experience designing complete cranes or major crane components.
• Understanding crane and runway/structure interaction.
• Strong mechanical calculations and component selection skills.
• Knowledge of AS 1418 or equivalent crane design code.
• Proficient with 3D CAD and drafting software (Inventor/AutoCAD).
• Experience with engineering calculations or FEA software.
• Experience with fabrication drawings, BOMs and design docs.
• Welded fabrication experience; working with fabrication teams.
• CPEng/RPEQ progression viewed favourably but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Design and select end carriages, trolleys, hoisting and travel systems.
• Design or specify wheels, shafts, drums, sheaves, hooks and related components.
• Size and select motors, gearboxes, brakes and drive systems.
• Complete mechanical, load, drive and fatigue calculations.
• Conduct or review FEA and other analyses.
• Produce 3D models, detailed fabrication drawings and manufacturing docs.
• Prepare bills of materials and engineering reports.
• Provide engineering support during fabrication, assembly, testing, installation and commissioning.
• Investigate issues and implement design improvements.
• Ensure designs comply with crane and machinery standards.

Requirements –

• A degree in Mechanical, Mechatronic or a closely related engineering discipline.
• At least five years of direct, hands-on overhead-crane design experience.
• Experience personally designing complete cranes or substantial crane components and systems.
• An understanding of both the crane itself and its runway or supporting structure.
• Strong mechanical calculations and component-selection experience.
• Knowledge of AS 1418 or another internationally recognised crane-design code.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD and drafting software such as Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, or comparable packages.
• Experience with engineering calculation or FEA software.Strong knowledge of manufacturing drawings, bills of materials and design documentation.
• Practical experience working with welded fabrication, machining and manufacturing teams.
• CPEng, RPEQ or progress towards professional registration will be viewed favourably but is not mandatory.
