Job summary

Birdon is hiring a Mechanical Equipment Specification Engineer for its Port Macquarie shipyard on the Hastings River. The role focuses on applying engineering analysis to specify mechanical and electrical equipment for projects, with responsibility for BOMs, design documentation and QA.

You will work across design, production and customer interfaces to deliver robust specifications, coordinate risk management, and promote safety and environmental standards within the team.

Qualifications

• Tertiary engineering qualification (degree) in a relevant discipline.
• 3–5 years’ experience in an engineering organisation.
• Experience in an Engineering Design house, supporting bids and project delivery.
• Familiarity with common design software, simulation tools and mechanical design processes/methodologies.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions in a changing environment.
• Strong communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills across stakeholders.
• Knowledge of commercial and Defence Marine service industry, maintenance, service and Class compliance practices is advantageous.
• Chartered Professional Engineer status in relevant discipline is desirable.
• Knowledge of marine engineering principles, systems and industry standards.

Responsibilities

• Mechanical system engineering design and integration activities.
• Identification, sourcing and requisition activities to support procurement of mechanical/electrical equipment.
• Management and oversight of Equipment List and BoM for projects.
• Development of engineering design and technical solutions for project and production delivery.
• Identification and management of technical risk.
• Applying safety-in-design principles.
• Support for design solution implementation from production to customer acceptance.
• Customer liaison and internal design meetings and reporting.
• Development of QA documentation.
• Project reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
