Job summary

Birdon invites applications for a Fitter Leading Hand in Port Macquarie, NSW, to oversee tradespeople on Birdon Marine projects, ensuring safety, quality and technical standards.

You will manage a team, support risk assessments, set up sites, train apprentices and model professional conduct in line with Birdon's values. The role offers a 4-day work week, with overtime Friday to Sunday, and a central NSW coastal location with diverse defence and marine projects.

Qualifications

• Cert III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade is required.
• Experience in a supervisory or leading hand role.
• Ability to understand and interpret drawings and specifications.
• Nationally accredited General Construction Induction (white card).
• Ability to lead a team and train others.
• Strong commitment to quality principles and attention to detail.
• Team player with a "make it happen safely" attitude.

Responsibilities

• Support the Supervisor to conduct risk assessments prior to production work and document control measures.
• Ensure safety processes are complied with on site.
• Set up the job site safely and maintain housekeeping requirements.
• Ensure team members are competent and trained for the scope of work.
• Train and develop apprentices on Birdon Marine projects.
• Model professional conduct and align with Birdon’s Code of Conduct and values.

Job description

Our Port Macquarie yard encompasses extensive capabilities focused on the design, maintenance, and manufacture of marine vessels for defence and the maritime industry and the recycling of defence and large commercial infrastructure.

As a Fitter Leading Hand, you will play a crucial role in ensuring project tasks are completed safely, to the highest quality and technical standards, by managing tradespersons and other team members on Birdon Marine projects.

Key Accountabilities

• Support the Supervisor to conduct risk assessments prior to production work commencement in accordance with Birdon's Safe Work Management System, documenting control measures in a task Risk assessment
• Ensuring safety processes are complied with
• Setting up the job site safely and maintaining housekeeping requirements
• Ensure team members are appropriately competent and trained to under-take the scope of work assigned
• Training and development of apprentices
• Role modelling of acceptable workplace behaviours consistent with Birdon's Code of Conduct and values

Qualifications, Experience & Skills

Essential

• Cert III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade
• Relevant trade experience with experience in a supervisory or leading hand role.
• Ability to understand and interpret drawings and specifications
• Nationally accredited General Construction Induction (white card)
• Ability to lead a team
• Strong commitment to quality principles
• High attention to detail
• Team player with a "make it happen safely" attitude

Desirable

• Maritime industry experience
• Other trade qualifications & skills
