Job summary

Birdon is seeking a Fitter Leading Hand to join our Port Macquarie yard. You will lead tradespeople on Birdon Marine projects, ensuring tasks are completed safely, to high quality, and in line with technical standards.

This role offers a 4-day work week, diverse builds and refits, and a coastal NSW location between Sydney and Brisbane. You will mentor apprentices and uphold Birdon’s safety and conduct expectations.

Qualifications

• Cert III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade.
• Experience in supervisory or leading hand role.
• Ability to interpret drawings and specifications.
• Nationally accredited General Construction Induction (white card).
• Maritime industry experience.
• First Aid certification.

Responsibilities

• Support the Supervisor to conduct risk assessments before production work.
• Ensure safety processes are complied with.
• Set up the job site safely and maintain housekeeping.
• Ensure team members are competent and trained for tasks.
• Train and develop apprentices.
• Model workplace conduct consistent with Birdon’s values.

As a Fitter Leading Hand, you will play a crucial role in ensuring project tasks are completed safely, to the highest quality and technical standards, by managing tradespersons and other team members on Birdon Marine projects.

Key Accountabilities

• Support the Supervisor to conduct risk assessments prior to production work commencement in accordance with Birdon’s Safe Work Management System, documenting control measures in a task Risk assessment
• Ensuring safety processes are complied with
• Setting up the job site safely and maintaining housekeeping requirements
• Ensure team members are appropriately competent and trained to under-take the scope of work assigned
• Training and development of apprentices
• Role modelling of acceptable workplace behaviours consistent with Birdon’s Code of Conduct and values

Qualifications, Experience & Skills

• Cert III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade
• Relevant trade experience with experience in a supervisory or leading hand role.
• Ability to understand and interpret drawings and specifications
• Nationally accredited General Construction Induction (white card)
• Ability to lead a team
• Strong commitment to quality principles
• High attention to detail
• Team player with a \"make it happen safely\" attitude
• Maritime industry experience
• First Aid
