Job summary

BHP is seeking a Principal Engineer Fire Systems in Adelaide, South Australia, reporting to the Engineering Superintendent. This permanent, full-time role sits within Copper SA, driving fire safety engineering leadership across underground operations.

You will define standards, lead risk management and governance, and collaborate with a broad network of stakeholders to deliver safer, smarter mining practices and integrate new technologies.

Qualifications

• Degree in Engineering or equivalent; fire safety specialization highly regarded.
• Extensive experience in fire safety engineering, incl. underground mining.
• Deep knowledge of active/passive fire protection systems and underground fire/explosion controls.
• Strong understanding of underground ventilation and risk management in fire scenarios.
• Familiar with international, Australian, and local standards and practices.
• Experience applying enterprise risk management and asset management frameworks.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills across a matrix organisation.
• Proven ability to lead strategic improvement initiatives and drive sustainable outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Define and improve fire and explosion risk management standards and technologies.
• Lead governance and assurance, overseeing critical controls across Copper SA.
• Support material risk management for fire and explosion risks.
• Partner with operational teams to strengthen risk controls and safety performance.
• Develop relationships with stakeholders across operational, functional and global areas.
• Provide specialist guidance and act as SME for fire systems and engineering practices.
• Champion innovation and adoption of emerging technologies.
• Demonstrate leadership aligned with BHP Charter, Code of Conduct and obligations.
