Job summary

Bogan Shire Council is hiring a Labourer – Rural Works to support our Infrastructure Services. This is an entry-path role with hands-on learning across rural roads, state highways, kerb and gutter, and footpath maintenance.

You will operate and maintain small plant, assist with traffic management, and help deliver scheduled road projects while ensuring safety and quality standards. This is a full-time opportunity with generous leave and career progression within the Council.

Qualifications

  • General knowledge of rural road maintenance and construction.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and within a team.
  • Clear communication with works programs and safety plans.
  • Competence in small plant operation and routine inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out rural road maintenance, pipe laying, culvert work and road furniture maintenance.
  • Conduct roadside cleanups and assist with traffic management setup.
  • Perform routine inspections of plant, tools and equipment and recommend repairs.
  • Undertake tree maintenance and removal as part of scheduled road maintenance.
  • Coordinate workflow to ensure timely completion and quality standard.
  • Operate and maintain Council plant and equipment (Front End Loader, Backhoe, Skid Steer).
  • Complete accurate daily records (timesheets, task sheets).
  • Ensure hazard identification and traffic control plans before work.

About the Role

As a Labourer – Rural Works, you will carry out maintenance and construction activities across rural roads, state highways, urban streets, kerb and gutter, and footpath assets. Key responsibilities include:

  • Completing rural road maintenance, pipe laying, culvert work, concreting, bitumen patching, fence construction and road furniture maintenance
  • Carrying out roadside clean ups and assisting with traffic management setup
  • Conducting routine inspections of minor plant, tools and equipment and recommending repairs
  • Safely undertaking tree maintenance and removal as part of scheduled road maintenance
  • Coordinating workflow to ensure tasks are completed on time and to the required standard
  • Operating and maintaining Council plant and equipment, including Front End Loader, Backhoe and Skid Steer, to acceptable standards
  • Completing accurate daily records such as timesheets, tasking sheets and plant operating sheets
  • Ensuring hazard identification, site safety checks and appropriate traffic control plans are completed and implemented before commencing work
Salary and Benefits
  • Grade 2: $1,049.98 to $1,199.96 based on qualifications and experience

What We’re Looking For

You have:

  • General knowledge of rural road maintenance and construction, including remote areas, and experience operating and maintaining small plant and equipment
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision and contribute positively within a team
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to interpret works programs
  • Strong organisational skills, problem solving ability and the capacity to manage competing priorities
  • Safe manual handling skills and experience in small plant operation
  • Numeracy and literacy levels typically associated with Year 10 education
  • Current Class MR or higher driver licence (or ability to obtain within 3 months)
  • Current Traffic Controller Card (or ability to obtain within 3 months)
  • Australian residency or valid work visa
  • Demonstrated competency for Backhoe, Skid Steer and Front End Loader
