Job description

Process Engineer - Water and wastewater treatment

Location - Brisbane or Perth

Binnies Australia are recruiting for a Process Engineer to develop and deliver process engineering solutions for drinking water, wastewater, recycled water and industrial or mine water treatment. Translate water quality and operating requirements into robust treatment designs, from feasibility through detailed design and commissioning support.

Working with Binnies Australia

We deliver water engineering consultancy for utilities, government and industrial clients, including treatment upgrades, conveyance and mine water projects. You will work with multidisciplinary teams and draw on Binnies and RSK specialists, including colleagues in other offices, to support studies, design and construction delivery.

The role supports direct client commissions and contractor-led design and construct projects. Work includes coordination with suppliers, operators and delivery partners, with site visits and travel as required by the assignment.

Role responsibilities -
  • Review flow, load and water quality data; establish design scenarios, treatment objectives, process assumptions and data gaps with the client and project team.
  • Undertake feasibility and options assessments, process sizing and mass balances; compare treatment performance, operability, energy, chemicals, residuals and whole-life cost.
  • Develop treatment designs within your expertise, including physical and chemical treatment, biological wastewater treatment, disinfection, sludge handling or advanced treatment.
  • Prepare process flow diagrams, process design calculations, equipment duties and process inputs to piping and instrumentation diagrams. Maintain consistency across documents.
  • Develop functional descriptions, operating philosophies and control requirements with electrical and automation engineers; coordinate hydraulic and mechanical interfaces.
  • Prepare equipment specifications and technical evaluations of vendor proposals, recording assumptions, performance requirements and departures from the design basis.
  • Participate in safety in design, HAZOP and operability reviews; assess chemical handling, process upsets, treatment reliability and continuity of service during upgrades.
  • Support construction queries, commissioning plans, performance testing and troubleshooting within the agreed scope. Record findings and recommend evidence-based improvements.
  • Contribute to client discussions, proposals and fee estimates. Manage assigned hours and milestones, identify scope changes and obtain technical review before issue.
Essential qualifications and experience -
  • Degree in Chemical, Process or Environmental Engineering, or a relevant engineering discipline with demonstrated treatment process competence.
  • Professional water or wastewater treatment experience is mandatory. Typically three or more years of relevant process engineering experience, including design deliverables.
  • Demonstrated design capability in at least one relevant treatment area and the ability to explain process selection, sizing assumptions and performance limitations.
  • Sound understanding of water chemistry or biological treatment, as relevant to your experience, together with mass balances and interpretation of operating data.
  • Ability to develop process documentation and work with mechanical, civil, electrical and automation engineers on integrated designs.
  • Strong spreadsheet, analysis and technical report writing skills; ability to apply relevant Australian water quality guidance, project approvals and client requirements.
  • Desalination or reuse experience, including reverse osmosis, membrane filtration or membrane bioreactors; relevant tools such as WAVE, IMSDesign, BioWin or GPS-X.
  • Australian utility, industrial or mine water projects; treatment optimisation, pilot trials, brine management, sludge treatment or resource recovery.
  • Commissioning and performance testing experience; HAZOP participation; CPEng or RPEQ, or active progress towards professional registration.
  • Attractive parental leave policy
  • Employee Assistance Program, including for your family
  • Diverse working environment
  • Wide network of resources through sister companies worldwide as part of RSK Group
