Job description

Civil Engineer - Water and wastewater infrastructure
Location - Perth or Brisbane

Deliver civil engineering design for water and wastewater infrastructure, including pipelines, pump stations and treatment plant upgrades. Take ownership of assigned design packages and coordinate with other disciplines to produce practical, buildable solutions.

Working with Binnies Australia

We deliver water engineering consultancy for utilities, government and industrial clients, including treatment upgrades, conveyance and mine water projects. You will work with multidisciplinary teams and draw on Binnies and RSK specialists, including colleagues in other offices, to support studies, design and construction delivery.

The role supports direct client commissions and contractor-led design and construct projects. Work includes coordination with suppliers, operators and delivery partners, with site visits and travel as required by the assignment.

Role Responsibilities
  • Assess existing assets, review survey and investigation data, identify information gaps and contribute to site inspections, feasibility studies, options assessments and whole-life cost comparisons.
  • Prepare concept, preliminary and detailed civil designs for water and sewer pipelines, pump station sites and treatment facilities, including site grading, earthworks, drainage, access and buried services.
  • Develop pipeline alignments, profiles and layouts; assess cover, crossings, service conflicts, construction access and tie-ins. Coordinate hydraulic, geotechnical, structural and environmental specialist inputs.
  • Prepare design calculations, reports, technical specifications, quantities and drawing mark-ups; brief CAD and BIM designers and check that drawings reflect the design basis.
  • Integrate civil works with process, mechanical, structural, electrical and control designs. Resolve interfaces and record assumptions, constraints and design decisions.
  • Contribute to safety in design and constructability reviews, including excavation, flooding, temporary works interfaces and maintaining operation during brownfield construction.
  • Support tender queries, technical bid reviews, contractor requests for information and site inspections. Record observations and elevate departures from the design.
  • Estimate hours and inputs for proposals, monitor progress against the agreed scope and budget, and flag changes early. Close review comments before controlled issue.
Essential Qualifications And Experience
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent relevant engineering qualification.
  • Demonstrated professional experience designing water or wastewater infrastructure. Typically three or more years of relevant engineering experience, with appointment based on capability.
  • Practical design experience in at least one of pipelines, pump stations or treatment plant civil works, with the ability to coordinate the remaining interfaces.
  • Ability to interpret surveys, geotechnical reports and existing asset records, and prepare traceable calculations and clear technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Australian design standards and the ability to apply project-specific water authority requirements.
  • Competence in engineering spreadsheets and reviewing CAD drawings or models; effective communication with clients, designers and construction teams.
Desirable Experience
  • Queensland or WA water utility projects; familiarity with Water Corporation, Seqwater, Urban Utilities or other relevant asset-owner requirements.
  • Civil 3D, 12d, GIS or relevant hydraulic modelling tools; experience with condition assessment, trenchless construction or brownfield tie-ins.
  • CPEng or RPEQ, or active progress towards professional registration; experience checking work or mentoring less experienced engineers.
