Job summary

Moree Plains Shire Council is seeking an Inventory & Purchasing Officer for up to 12 months maternity relief, based in Moree. You will manage stock levels, raise purchase orders, and assist with RFQs and tenders while maintaining safe storage and regulatory compliance.

The role requires forklift and driving competencies. You will work with the Depot, Fleet & Logistics team to ensure value for money, accurate stock movement, and timely reporting.

Qualifications

  • Certificate III in Procurement or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with stock control, purchasing systems and RFQ processes.
  • Proven negotiation and supplier management abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain stock levels and update the stores information system.
  • Process purchase orders and assist with RFQs and tender processes.
  • Conduct stocktakes and resolve discrepancies.
  • Operate light machinery and ensure safe storage per WHS standards.
  • Prepare supplier quotations and support procurement decisions.

At Moree Plains Shire Council, we are looking for a systematic, analytical, and proactive professional to join our team as an Inventory & Purchasing Officer. This is a temporary full-time opportunity for a period of up to 12 months (maternity relief), offering a great chance to showcase your logistics skills and keep our critical store operations running smoothly.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager Depot, Fleet & Logistics, you will be essential to the effectiveness of the Tycannah Street Works Depot. You will ensure that Council maintains optimum stock levels while strictly adhering to procurement policies to achieve consistent value for money.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing inventory control by maintaining appropriate stock levels and ensuring accurate, timely updates within the Stores information system.
  • Facilitating accurate stock movement by maintaining a stock register and conducting regular stocktakes to rectify and report discrepancies.
  • Handling financial administration, including raising purchase orders and completing account reconciliations within your scope of delegations.
  • Operating light machinery such as forklifts and front-end loaders to organise and distribute stock, including chemical products.
  • Leading procurement documentation, assisting with Request for Quotations (RFQ) and tender processes using platforms like Tenderlink.
  • Researching product availability and sourcing external quotations to ensure quality and value for internal customers.
  • Managing plant data by verifying and inputting daily and weekly plant running sheets into Council's management system.
  • Ensuring safety and compliance by maintaining storage areas that meet WHS and Hazardous Materials standards.

Basis of Employment: Temporary Full-Time (Up to 12 months maternity relief)

About You

You are a self-motivated team player with excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills. You possess the ability to perform accurately under time pressure while maintaining discretion when dealing with suppliers.

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

  • Certificate III in Procurement or a similar industry discipline, or equivalent experience in retail/procurement services.
  • Proven computer literacy with experience using computerised stock and purchasing systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise work and meet strict deadlines with high attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills with a focus on delivering courteous customer service.
  • Physical capability to undertake heavy manual handling tasks.
Required Tickets and Licences:
  • High Risk Work Licence (Forklift) (LF).
  • General Construction Induction Certificate (White Card).
  • Current Class C Driver's Licence (NSW).
  • Previous Local Government experience.
  • Experience operating a Front End Loader.
  • MR Driver's Licence or Dogging Certificate (DG).
  • Working at Heights or First Aid Certification.
Required Clearances:
  • National Criminal History Check.
  • Pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol testing.
