Job summary

Byron Shire Council seeks an experienced Supervisor General Maintenance to lead a skilled field-based workforce across the Shire infrastructure. You will deliver and renew maintenance projects safely, efficiently and to a high standard, coordinating teams outdoors and interfacing with residents and contractors.

The role reports to the Team Leader General Maintenance, requiring hands-on leadership, planning, and a focus on service delivery and community impact.

Qualifications

  • Experience leading a small to medium operational team.
  • Extensive civil construction, road maintenance or related industry experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, drawings and specifications.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and WHS requirements.

  • Lead, coordinate and motivate a team to achieve scheduled maintenance and renewal works.
  • Plan, schedule and monitor daily work activities to ensure projects are completed safely, on time and within budget.
  • Supervise civil maintenance activities including bridge repairs, drainage works, vegetation management and roadworks.
  • Operate and maintain major and minor plant and equipment.
  • Support the preparation and implementation of work programs and look-ahead schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with Work Health and Safety and council policies.

What you'll be doing
  • Lead, coordinate and motivate a team to achieve scheduled maintenance and renewal works.
  • Plan, schedule and monitor daily work activities to ensure projects are completed safely, on time and within budget.
  • Supervise a range of civil maintenance activities including bridge repairs, drainage works, vegetation management, concrete works, retaining structures, road barriers, rubbish removal and unsealed road maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain major plant (grader, roller, backhoe, forklift, loader, etc.) and minor plant (power tools, chainsaw, etc.).
  • Support the preparation and implementation of work programs and three-week look-ahead schedules.
  • Monitor staff performance, provide coaching and foster a positive team culture.
  • Ensure compliance with Work Health and Safety requirements, Council policies and environmental standards.
  • Liaise with residents, contractors, consultants and other stakeholders to provide excellent customer service.
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications and technical drawings, and calculate material quantities for projects.
  • Coordinate the safe and efficient use of plant, equipment, vehicles and tools.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and operational efficiencies across the Works team.

This role participates in a rostered on-call service and may require scheduled or unscheduled overtime as part of providing essential community services.

What we're looking for
  • Demonstrated experience leading and coordinating a small to medium-sized operational team.
  • Extensive experience in civil construction, road construction, road maintenance or a related industry.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, support and develop team members.
  • Proven ability to prioritise competing workloads, delegate tasks and deliver projects to agreed deadlines.
  • Experience reading and interpreting plans, technical drawings and specifications.
  • Competency in the use of levelling and set-out equipment, including dumpy levels.
  • Experience operating and maintaining major and minor plant and equipment.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • A commitment to workplace safety, teamwork and continuous improvement.
  • Competent computer skills, including the ability to use tablets and software for reporting and communication.
Essential Qualifications & Licenses:
  • Certificate in Civil Construction or equivalent experience.
  • Class C Driver Licence.
  • WorkCover Construction Induction Certificate (White Card).
Desirable Qualifications & Experience:
  • LR and/or MR Driver Licence.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Traffic Controller and Implement Traffic Control Plans tickets.
  • Working Near Overhead Power Lines competency.
  • Experience monitoring project budgets.
  • Knowledge of erosion and sediment control practices.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.

We offer:
  • Full-time position (38 hours per week)
  • Salary and Conditions will be in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award with an appointment at a salary in the range of $1,403.59 to $1,626.28 per week (dependent upon skills and experience)

Location:

This position is based at Council's Works Depot in Byron Bay, however Council can require you to work from other work sites as required for operational reasons.
