Job summary

Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) in Melbourne is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to build and maintain the data infrastructure supporting VMIA’s data and digital initiatives. You’ll write clean code, develop documentation, and help deploy secure, reliable data platforms within the Data and Analytics team of the Business Performance Division.

The role involves building Snowflake databases, writing Python/SQL, managing IaC with Pulumi/Terraform, and contributing to CI/CD pipelines

Qualifications

• Exposure to relational databases and SQL.
• Exposure to Python, including data structures, scripting and JSON/YAML.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to break down complex problems.
• Strong written communication skills for documenting technical work.
• Practical experience in software/ data engineering or data modelling.
• Familiarity with automated testing, code reviews and CI/CD.
• Familiarity with Git, Jira and Confluence.
• Understanding of APIs and data formats like JSON, CSV, XML.
• Collaborative approach and openness to feedback.

Responsibilities

• Help build and maintain Snowflake databases, schemas, warehouses, tables and stored procedures using IaC tools like Pulumi or Terraform.
• Write Python and SQL to support deployment scripts and data ingestion pipelines.
• Assist with consistent deployments across development, test and production environments.
• Contribute to platform configurations using YAML/JSON.
• Implement and maintain RBACs and access policies under senior guidance.
• Support infrastructure configuration to improve scalability, security and cost control.
• Write and maintain automated tests and support CI/CD pipelines.
• Use Git and GitHub for branching, reviews, and pull requests.
• Maintain documentation and identify risks or issues in accordance with policies.
