Job summary

Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology is seeking an experienced Health Professional to join our Microbiology team at Macquarie Park. You will perform routine and specialised microbiological testing on clinical specimens and read culture plates from a wide range of specimen types.

You will conduct microscopy, identify microorganisms, and perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing while ensuring QA/QC and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Graduate with Medical Science degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in plate reading in a clinical microbiology lab.
  • Experience with both automated and manual methodologies.
  • Understanding of QA/QC processes in a clinical laboratory.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Willingness to work rostered hours including weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret culture plates from urine, faeces, wound, respiratory, and blood culture samples.
  • Conduct and interpret microscopy, including Gram stains.
  • Identify clinically significant microorganisms using conventional and automated methods.
  • Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing and interpret results.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality management systems and accreditation standards.
  • Participate in quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing activities.
  • Support junior staff through training and mentoring.
  • Collaborate with other team members to complete tasks promptly and accurately.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and workflow optimisation.

Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology is an established and well-respected pathology practice offering comprehensive, high-quality pathology services across New South Wales and northwest Victoria. Our culture of Medical Leadership drives excellence in patient care and service provision for our referring doctors.

We seek an enthusiastic and experienced Health Professional to join our vibrant Microbiology team in Macquarie Park. You will be an essential team member, and your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Perform routine and specialised microbiological testing on clinical specimens.
  • Read and interpret culture plates from a wide range of specimen types, including urine, faeces, wound, respiratory, and blood culture samples
  • Conduct and interpret microscopy, including Gram stains and other relevant staining techniques.
  • Identify clinically significant microorganisms using conventional and automated methodologies.
  • Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing and interpret results in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality management systems, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing activities.
  • Support junior staff through training and mentoring.
  • Collaborating with other team members to achieve tasks promptly and accurately
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and workflow optimisation.

We are looking for the following:

  • A graduate with a Medical Science degree or a recognised equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum 5 years' recent experience in plate reading within a clinical microbiology laboratory, using both automated and manual methodologies, including culture plate reading and interpretation (medical mycology experience advantageous), clinical microscopy and Gram stain interpretation, bacterial pathogen identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
  • Understanding of quality assurance and quality control processes in a clinical laboratory.
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organisational skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and work effectively within a team.
  • Highly motivated, reliable and flexible, with availability to work rostered hours, including weekends as required.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
