Job summary

SMEC in North Sydney is seeking a recent Graduate Structural Engineer to join our Rail & Metro team. As a Graduate, you’ll contribute to major rail and metro infrastructure projects, gaining hands-on design, analysis and documentation experience from day one.

Our two-year Graduate Development Program combines project exposure with mentoring, workshops, and structured learning across teams and disciplines, with opportunities to build consulting skills and advance your career within the SJ Group.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Exposure to AutoCAD or Civil 3D (12D advantageous).

Responsibilities

• Support delivery of real infrastructure projects from day one across design, analysis and documentation.
• Support design development, including drawings, models and technical documentation.
• Assist with calculations and analysis across roads, drainage or structures.
• Participate in site visits to understand how designs are implemented on live projects.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate design inputs and milestones.
• Learn and apply industry standards, tools and best practices through structured development and on-job experience.

The Role

We are seeking a recent Graduate Structural Engineer to join our Rail & Metro team in North Sydney. Key responsibilities:

• You’ll support the delivery of real infrastructure projects from day one — contributing to design, analysis and documentation while learning from experienced engineers and gaining exposure to site and project delivery.
• Contribute to the delivery of real projects by supporting design development, including drawings, models and technical documentation
• Assist with engineering calculations and analysis across areas such as roads, drainage or structures under guidance from senior engineers
• Participate in site visits and inspections to develop an understanding of how designs are implemented on live projects
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate design inputs and support project delivery milestones
• Learn and apply industry standards, tools and best practice through structured development and on‑job experience

About You

You’re a motivated Civil Engineering graduate who enjoys problem‑solving, working in teams, and contributing to real‑world projects. You will bring:

• A degree in Civil Engineering (or related discipline)
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Exposure to design tools such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D (12D or similar advantageous)
