Job description

Graduate / Junior Mechanical Design Engineer

Vacvator is an Australian manufacturer of specialist truck-mounted equipment, including vacuum excavation, dry vacuum, and high-flow pipe jetting equipment.

We design and manufacture our equipment in Goulburn and are looking for a Graduate or Junior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team.

This is a hands-on early-career engineering role where you’ll work under the guidance and supervision of experienced engineers, developing your skills while contributing to real design and development projects from concept through to manufacture. You'll work closely with experienced engineers, our production team and suppliers, giving you the opportunity to see the equipment you design being built and put into service.

What you'll be doing

Develop 3D models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings under the guidance of experienced engineers.

Assist with designing new mechanical components and systems and improving existing products.

Working with the workshop to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable and easy to assemble and service.

Assist with supporting production and resolving design or manufacturing issues.

Carrying out engineering calculations and assisting with design verification with appropriate review and supervision.

Maintaining engineering drawings, BOMs and technical documentation.

Gradually take on greater responsibility for design tasks and projects as your experience develops.

About you

We’re looking for someone at the beginning of their engineering career who is keen to learn, enjoys practical mechanical problem-solving and is comfortable asking questions and working under the direction of more experienced engineers.

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

Experience using 3D CAD through university, work experience or personal projects.

Good mechanical aptitude and an interest in how things are manufactured and assembled.

Clear communication skills and the ability to work with both engineers and tradespeople.

Attention to detail and a practical approach to problem solving.

Autodesk Inventor experience.

Knowledge of fabricated steel structures, sheet metal or machining.

Exposure to hydraulics, pneumatics, heavy vehicles or mobile equipment.

Previous experience in a manufacturing or workshop environment.

You’ll join a growing Australian manufacturer where the engineering team has direct involvement in the finished product. For an early-career engineer, the role offers broad exposure to mechanical design and manufacturing rather than being restricted to one small area of a large engineering department.
