Job summary

Argo Natural Resources is seeking a geotechnical engineer to support underground coal operations in Queensland's Bowen Basin. You will oversee geotechnical risk management, lead investigations, and collaborate with geology, mining and operations teams to improve safety and efficiency on site.

Responsibilities include design and review of ground conditions, monitoring programs, hazard identification, and reporting to management.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, or a related field.
• Experience in geotechnical engineering within underground coal mining operations.
• Demonstrated experience leading geotechnical investigations and providing interpretation.
• Risk management experience.
• Experience in selecting and collaborating with expert consultants.
• RPEQ qualification or intent to obtain is desirable.

• Develop and implement geotechnical monitoring programs.

• Develop Strata Support plans grounded in best practice Geotechnical design.
• Review and audit mine operations in line with Strata Trigger action response plans.

Job description

Carborough Downs underground Bord and Pillar mine is located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, approximately 30km north-east of Moranbah and 160km from Mackay and forms part of the broader Argo Complex. This integrated mining complex includes the Ironbark Longwall Mine and Broadlea Open Cut, as well as a centralised Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP), where collaboration between our sites and teams is key to delivering safe and efficient outcomes.

WHAT THIS OPPORTUNITY IS ABOUT

You will primarily focus on providing critical support to the team and manage project initiatives to improve operations on site. You will be a part of a collaborative team of professionals that have extensive operational and technical experience, with strength and focus on underground coal operations.

• Oversee planning and management of risks associated with Geotechnical hazards within the bounds of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act and Regulations to maintain and improve mine safety.
• Perform geotechnical assessment, design and review work, including mapping, sampling, and laboratory testing, to assess ground conditions and identify and manage potential hazards.
• Develop and implement geotechnical monitoring programs to ensure early detection of any geotechnical issues.
• Work in collaboration with the geology, mining, and operational teams.
• Conduct regular inspections of high-risk areas and recommend appropriate remedial measures when required.
• Prepare comprehensive geotechnical reports and present findings and recommendations to management and key stakeholders.
• Develop Strata Support plans underpinned by best practice Geotechnical design and sound industry experience.
• Develop, review and audit mine operations in line with Strata Trigger action response plans.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

• Bachelor's degree in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, engineering geology or a related field.
• Experience in geotechnical engineering within underground coal mining operations.
• Demonstrated experience leading geotechnical investigations and providing interpretation.
• Risk management experience.
• Experience in the selection, engagement, and collaboration of expert consultants.
• RPEQ qualification or the intent to obtain is desirable but not essential.
• A strategic thinker with superior reasoning and problem-solving skills.
