Job summary

NEPEAN Longwall in Paget, Mackay QLD, is seeking a motivated Gearbox Fitter with Cylinder Rebuild experience to join our workshop-based team. This role offers a 4-day compressed working week and the opportunity to work on specialised underground mining equipment.

You will inspect, repair and overhaul gearboxes, read drawings, and contribute to continuous improvement in a safe, efficient workshop environment.

Qualifications

• Trade qualification as Mechanical Fitter or similar.
• Experience with gearboxes and heavy industrial equipment.
• Ability to read drawings and parts manuals.
• Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, repair and overhaul gearboxes and associated components.
• Disassemble, rebuild and test gearbox assemblies.
• Install and commission gearbox systems and ensure proper connections.
• Read and interpret manufacturing drawings and parts manuals.
• Carry out preventative maintenance and routine checks.
• Maintain a safe, organized workshop in line with WHS standards.

Job description

NEPEAN Longwall is a leading provider of longwall mining equipment and services to Australia’s underground coal industry. Due to continued growth, we are seeking a motivated and reliable Gearbox Fitter with Cylinder Rebuild experience to join our team based in Paget, Mackay QLD.

This is a local, workshop-based role offering a 4-day compressed working week, providing genuine work–life balance while working on specialised underground mining equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, repair and overhaul gearboxes and associated components
• Disassemble, rebuild and test gearbox assemblies
• Install and commission gearbox systems, ensuring correct connections and functionality
• Read and interpret manufacturing drawings and parts manuals
• Carry out preventative maintenance, routine checks, cleaning and lubrication
• Use measuring tools such as micrometres and verniers to complete accurate fitting work
• Complete basic machining and manufacture of small components where required
• Maintain a safe, organised and clean workshop in line with WHS, quality and environmental standards
• Assist with fault finding, identifying maintenance needs and supporting continuous improvement opportunities
• Support apprentices by demonstrating correct work procedures and safe work practices

About You

• Trade qualification as a Mechanical Fitter, Fitter and Turner, or similar
• Experience working with gearboxes, heavy industrial equipment, mobile plant or mining equipment
• Ability to drawings and parts manuals
• Strong fault-finding, diagnostic and problem-solving skills
• High attention to detail with a commitment to producing quality work
• Safety-focused, reliable and able to work effectively in a workshop team environment
• Basic computer skills and a willingness to follow internal systems, processes and procedures
• Forklift or overhead crane experience would be advantageous
