Job summary

New Atlas is seeking a hands-on Finance Lead to join a newly shaped leadership team. Based in Melbourne with remote collaboration, you will own day-to-day finance, payroll and reporting while driving efficiencies across a fast-paced media business.

You will partner with executives to deliver monthly management accounts, budgets and cash flow forecasts, and coordinate with external accountants on BAS and tax. Strong Xero skills and SME experience are essential.

• SME finance experience required.
• Proficient in Xero and Australian payroll.
• Strong budgeting and reporting skills.

Responsibilities

• Own day-to-day finance operations in Xero including AP/AR and bank reconciliations.
• Run payroll, superannuation, and leave records.
• Prepare monthly management accounts, budgets, forecasts and cash flow reports.
• Coordinate with external accountants on BAS, tax returns and statutory obligations.
• Manage suppliers, contracts, insurance and compliance deadlines.
• Lead people administration tasks and support managers on HR matters.
• Identify and drive process improvements to automate and simplify workflows.
• Contribute independent judgement to leadership discussions.

You'll work closely with the Managing Director and leadership team to make the foundations stable, predictable and enviably profitable, without losing the entrepreneurial spirit or drive to reimagine the future of media. You'll be part of a newly shaped leadership team in a fast-paced, flexible environment. Recent growth has put some processes under strain, and you'll build the rigour needed to scale.

Key responsibilities

Own day-to-day finance in Xero: AP, AR, bank recs, payments and approvals

Run payroll, super and leave records

Prepare monthly management accounts, budgets, forecasts and cash flow reporting

Work with external accountants on BAS, tax returns and statutory obligations

Manage suppliers, contracts, subscriptions, insurance and compliance deadlines

Handle people admin: contracts, onboarding and offboarding, employee records, HR policies, and support for managers on employment matters

Spot ways to simplify, automate and tighten up how we work, and lead those projects through to done

Bring independent judgement and practical recommendations to leadership discussions

About you

Based in Melbourne, with the right to work in Australia

Solid experience in finance, bookkeeping or accounting in an SME

Strong hands-on Xero, Australian payroll, super and reconciliation skills

Good financial literacy: budgeting, cash flow and management reporting

A track record of improving processes and implementing systems

Experience working independently across a broad mix of responsibilities

Commercial judgement and the confidence to challenge the way things are done

Integrity, discretion and great follow-through

Comfortable working remotely with a global team across time zones
