Job summary

Ampersand Ltd in Melbourne is seeking a Design & Project Engineer to own the mechanical design of automation and robotic projects from concept to install. You will coordinate end-to-end project delivery, work with internal and external designers, ensure compliance with Australian machinery safety standards (AS 4024) and support on-site installations with interstate and international travel.

• 5+ years of engineering experience in automation or robotic systems.
• Experience managing automation projects from design to installation.
• Strong knowledge of Australian machinery safety standards (AS 4024).
• Proficient in 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks, Inventor).

Responsibilities

Design & Project Engineer - Robotics & Automation

Clayton, VIC | Permanent, full-time | $110,000 - $120,000 base + super

About the business

This is a well-established, Australian-owned engineering business with a long history of supplying advanced manufacturing technology. Its automation division designs and delivers robotic and automation solutions for manufacturers in Australia and overseas.

The role

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you’ll own the mechanical design of automation and robotic projects and coordinate their delivery from concept to install.

What you’ll do

• Concept, design and detail the mechanical content of robot cells and automation systems: fixtures, grippers, frames, conveyors and guarding
• Coordinate projects end to end, including planning documents, timing, budgets, progress meetings and customer updates
• Work with internal and external mechanical and electrical designers
• Make sure designs meet Australian machinery safety standards and customer requirements
• Provide mechanical input to quotes and assess new opportunities at the pre-sales stage
• Support installs on site, with interstate and international travel as needed

About you

• Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering, or similar
• 5+ years’ engineering experience, including mechanical design for automation or robotic systems
• Experience managing automation projects, from design through to installation
• Strong knowledge of Australian machinery safety standards (AS 4024)
• 3D CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Inventor or similar)
• Confident dealing with clients at all levels
• Background with a system integrator, machine builder or special-purpose machinery manufacturer highly regarded
