Job Description
Freelance Robotics is seeking a Robotic Systems Engineer to join our engineering team in Redland Bay. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on the design, development, integration and deployment of robotic and automated systems for industrial applications. The position combines mechanical engineering and machine design with robotics, automation, controls and system integration.
You will work across the full project lifecycle, from concept development and mechanical design through to manufacture, assembly, programming, integration, commissioning and customer handover. The role would suit a Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics or Automation Engineer who enjoys designing and building real machinery and wants to work across a broad range of robotics and advanced manufacturing projects. A key component of the role involves practical engineering work in our Redland Bay facility and at customer sites.
1. Mechanical & Systems Engineering Design mechanical equipment, robotic systems, machines, assemblies and automation solutions.
Develop concepts, layouts and detailed designs for robotic cells, machinery and associated equipment. Produce 3D CAD models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings and bills of materials. Specify mechanical components, actuators, sensors, motors, gearboxes, pneumatics and other system components.
Undertake engineering calculations and assess mechanical loads, tolerances, materials and system requirements. Design and integrate guarding, fixtures, tooling, robot end effectors and other mechanical systems. Work with suppliers and manufacturers to take designs from concept through fabrication and assembly.
Participate in design reviews, risk assessments and engineering verification.
2. Robotics & Automation Integration Integrate industrial robots, collaborative robots, mobile robots and associated automation equipment.
Develop and modify robot programs and automation sequences. Integrate sensors, machine vision, safety systems, PLCs, HMIs, drives and industrial communications. Configure and test interfaces between mechanical, electrical, control and robotic systems.
Develop basic software, scripts and engineering tools where required. Undertake system calibration, testing and optimisation.
3. Assembly, Commissioning, & Deployment
Participate in the mechanical assembly, integration and testing of robotic and automated equipment. Install and commission systems at customer sites. Perform system bring-up, calibration, tuning and functional testing.
Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, controls and software issues. Inspect and test equipment to ensure required performance, reliability and safety. Identify opportunities to improve system performance and reliability.
Support maintenance, servicing, modifications and upgrades of installed systems. Provide operator and maintenance training to customers.
4. Project Engineering & Documentation
Work with engineers, technicians, project managers, suppliers and customers throughout the project lifecycle. Develop system specifications, technical documentation, drawings, manuals and commissioning records. Assist with project planning, procurement, scheduling and technical coordination.
Conduct engineering risk assessments and contribute to machinery safety and compliance activities. Maintain clear records of engineering decisions, testing, commissioning and system performance. Support project handover and ongoing technical support.
You do not need experience in every area.
