Job summary

SMC Corporation ANZ is seeking a highly motivated Controls Design Manager to lead and develop the controls design team. You will guide engineering design projects, ensuring compliance with Australian standards and company policies, while delivering high-quality solutions for customers.

You will manage objectives, performance reviews, and daily tasks, driving continuous improvement in the design process and team performance. Strong CAD skills and leadership experience are essential.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Engineering is essential.
• Minimum 10 years' engineering design team leadership experience in manufacturing/industrial environments.
• Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
• Electrical Licence is an advantage.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the Controls design team, setting objectives and conducting performance reviews.
• Ensure design work meets regulatory, Australian Standards and company standards.
• Collaborate with Head of Engineering to align design costs and processes.
• Ensure products are fit for purpose and manufacturable with error-proofing concepts.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of new product developments and document technical designs.

Job description

We have an opportunity for a highly motivated Controls Design Manager who will be responsible for managing, guiding and developing the controls design team and their performance to deliver solutions that exceed customer expectations, statutory regulations and SMC standards while also enabling quality and efficient assembly and technical support.

You’ll be Responsible for

Manage, guide and develop a team of Technical Design Engineers (Controls) through:

Development of annual objectives, monitoring of progress and accurate completion of annual performance reviews

Setting day-to-day operational objectives, allocation of individual tasks, scheduling and rescheduling as required in line with changing business needs

Verification of work accomplishment to required engineering standards.

Monitoring, reporting and continuously improving the design process, team and individual performance

Strengthening the engagement of all team members and providing timely feedback on performance and team dynamics.

Maintain effective communications with internal & external stakeholders on all technical and engineering support activities.

Provide technical and engineering support to all team members.

Maintain knowledge of and actively support company compliance with National, State and all other regulations governing engineering and product related standards.

Enforce SMC policies and standard processes as they apply to the team.

Technical Product Design & Development

Design products and systems which comply to applicable regulatory and Australian Standards and statutory requirements.

Develop products and systems which meet SMC Corporation ANZ technical, quality and cost effectiveness standards.

Work closely with Head of Engineering to ensure compliance with SMC scope of work and restricted applications.

Work closely with the Head of Engineering to ensure alignment with design costs and processes.

Ensure that product design is "fit for the purpose" and can be efficiently assembled to desired quality standards. Wherever possible design-for-manufacture and include error proofing concepts whenever possible.

Maintain an up-to-date technical knowledge of the company’s new product developments.

Produce technical design documents of proposed products or systems which meet SMC Corporation ANZ and industry standards

Use approved reference and standards for the research and resourcing of technical documentation

Produce as required:

Technical design and development documents

Technical manuals support of SMC design and manufactured components, products, or systems

Procedural testing and commission documentation

Quality sampling requirements for QA section (as required)

About You

Tertiary qualification in Engineering is essential: Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (acceptable) or Bachelor of Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering with relevant industry experience (preferred).

Electrical Licence (advantage).

Minimum 10 years' relevant engineering design team leadership in a manufacturing/industrial environment, developing a high-performance team (essential).

Proficient in 2D/3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
