Qualifications

• Experience in road construction and maintenance.

• Certificate IV in Civil Construction is highly regarded.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day supervision of road and street works, including drainage, delivered by in-house teams and subcontractors.
• Coordinate crews, plant and contractors to achieve quality outcomes.
• Plan and schedule inspections, monitor workflow and maintain safety standards.
• Monitor progress, report to the Manager Road Construction and Maintenance, and manage budgets and resources.
• Assist with planning for annual works and respond to operational issues as they arise.
• Support disaster and emergency management responses when required.

Balonne Shire Council is seeking a capable and practical Construction Supervisor to help lead the delivery of road construction and maintenance works across the region. This role plays an important part in maintaining safe, reliable and fit-for-purpose transport infrastructure for local communities, industry, visitors and essential services. Based in St George, approximately 600 kilometres south-west of Brisbane, Balonne Shire covers more than 31,000 square kilometres and includes the communities of St George, Dirranbandi, Hebel, Bollon, Thallon, Nindigully and the Queensland side of Mungindi. Reporting to the Manager Road Construction and Maintenance, the Construction Supervisor will provide day-to-day supervision of Council's road and street works, including drainage, delivered by Council's day labour workforce and subcontractors. This is a hands-on leadership role suited to someone who understands civil construction environments and enjoys coordinating people, plant, equipment and contractors to achieve quality outcomes.

The role is responsible for managing the daily delivery of construction works, including inspection scheduling, defect inspection, condition ratings, workflow monitoring and quality requirements. You will assist with planning and coordination, provide leadership to work crews, monitor performance, and help ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with Council standards, policies and operational priorities.

A typical day may involve allocating resources, liaising with crews and contractors, monitoring quality on site, responding to emerging operational issues, updating the Manager Road Construction and Maintenance on progress, and ensuring customer requests or road-related matters are investigated, acted on and reported appropriately. The position contributes to budget monitoring, approved purchasing processes and practical planning for annual works activity.

This role is important in supporting Council's disaster and emergency management response, including coordinating road closures and resources when required. You will need to apply sound judgement, exercise initiative where procedures are not clearly defined, and maintain a strong focus on safety, service delivery and practical problem solving.

Balonne Shire Council is looking for someone who can communicate effectively at different levels of the organisation and with external stakeholders, while modelling professionalism, integrity and a customer-focused approach. You will be expected to build positive working relationships across Council, support continuous improvement and cultural change, and contribute to a constructive team environment.

To be successful, you will bring experience in road construction and maintenance, along with demonstrated experience managing employees, plant and equipment, and contractors. You will be confident working unsupervised, meeting demanding deadlines, interpreting and applying policies and procedures, and using Microsoft Office. A Certificate IV in Civil Construction and previous local government experience would be highly regarded.
