Job summary

ibis Styles Mount Isa in Mount Isa is seeking an experienced Commis Chef to join a busy kitchen. You will work across food preparation and busy à la carte service, with responsibilities including preparing, cooking and plating dishes to a consistent standard while managing your own section during service.

The role offers casual hours (approximately 30-38 hours per week) mainly in evenings and weekends, with Grade 3 casual rates as per the Hospitality Award.

Qualifications

• Experience in a busy restaurant, pub or hotel kitchen is preferred.
• Strong cooking, prep and plating skills.
• Ability to run a section independently during service.
• Ability to work quickly under pressure while maintaining quality.
• Good organisation and time-management skills.
• Knowledge of food safety and kitchen hygiene practices.
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and public holidays; strong references.
• Formal cookery qualification is advantageous, but practical experience is highly regarded.

Located in the heart of Mount Isa, our hotel offers comfortable accommodation alongside Giuseppe's Cantina, our relaxed onsite restaurant serving hotel guests, locals and visitors to the region.

We are looking for an experienced Casual Commis Chef to join our kitchen team, working approximately 30-38 hours per week, predominantly across evening and weekend shifts.

Job Description

As a Commis Chef, you will work closely with the kitchen team across food preparation and busy à la carte service.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Preparing, cooking and plating dishes to a consistent standard
• Managing your own section confidently during service
• Supporting mise en place and daily food preparation
• Maintaining high standards of food quality and presentation
• Working efficiently during busy service periods
• Following food safety, hygiene and kitchen cleanliness requirements
• Assisting with stock rotation, storage and waste minimisation
• Working collaboratively with the wider kitchen and restaurant team

This is a casual position offering approximately 30-38 hours per week, with most shifts falling across evenings and weekends.

The position is paid at Grade 3 casual rates in accordance with the applicable Hospitality Award.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

• Previous experience working as a chef in a busy restaurant, pub or hotel kitchen
• Strong cooking, preparation and plating skills
• Confidence running a section independently during service
• The ability to work quickly under pressure while maintaining quality and consistency
• Strong organisation and time-management skills
• Good knowledge of food safety and kitchen hygiene practices
• A reliable, professional and team-focused approachFlexibility to work evenings, weekends and public holidays as required
• Strong and contactable professional references

A formal cookery qualification is advantageous, however strong practical kitchen experience and capability will be highly regarded.
