Job summary

St Basil’s Homes (SA) is seeking a skilled Catering Assistant to join our Christie Downs kitchen on a casual basis. You will work with the Head Chef and the catering team to maintain high standards of food preparation, presentation, and safety while supporting meal service to residents.

The role requires at least 2 years’ experience in a similar setting, strong teamwork, and knowledge of safe food handling and aged care dietary requirements.

Qualifications

• Experience in a similar role is preferred.
• Understanding of safe food handling practices.
• Knowledge of dietary requirements for aged care.
• Experience in a commercial kitchen or aged care setting.

Responsibilities

• Assist with basic food preparation under the direction of the Chef or Cook.
• Support meal plating and service to ensure timely delivery to residents.
• Maintain a clean, hygienic, and organised kitchen environment.
• Operate commercial kitchen equipment safely.
• Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment.
• Follow food safety, infection control, and agedcare standards.
• Work collaboratively with the catering team to ensure smooth daily operations.

The Role

In this role you will report directly to the Head Chef and play an essential part in our collaborative catering team, ensuring smooth and efficient operations at our Christie Downs site. As an experienced Catering Assistant/Cook, you will work as a member of our wider kitchen team on a casual basis. You will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of catering and presentation whilst handling, preparing and storing food, in addition to associated cleaning tasks. You will demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with food safety standards.

What You’ll Do And Be Responsible For

• Assist with basic food preparation under the direction of the Chef or Cook
• Work in a Chef/Cook capacity when required to support leave
• Support meal plating and service to ensure timely delivery to residents
• Maintain a clean, hygienic, and organised kitchen environment
• Operate commercial kitchen equipment safely
• Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment
• Follow food safety, infection control, and agedcare standards
• Work collaboratively with the catering team to ensure smooth daily operations

What You’ll Need To Succeed

• A minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar role.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fastpaced environment
• Strong teamwork and communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
• Understanding of safe food handling practices
• Knowledge of dietary requirements specific to Aged Care
• Previous experience in a commercial kitchen or aged care setting
• Relevant qualifications (Cert III or IV Commercial Cookery, Trade Qualification etc) are highly regarded but not essential
