Blue Green Australia is seeking a dedicated café leader to operate a new venture at the historic Retort House on Sydney Harbour. You will run day-to-day operations with two program/event managers, shaping a distinctive, community-focused offering and guiding it toward sustainability.
We value entrepreneurial spirit, strong relationships with local customers and suppliers, and a mission-driven approach to hospitality that supports climate, nature and social impact.
You'll have genuine influence over the menu, suppliers, atmosphere, operations and direction of the café. There are some limitations, the theme of the venture is 'nothing new' so expect quirky furniture, a hang out vibe and purpose driven suppliers. The rent is quite low so we are much more interested in building a durable community than profit maximising through menu engineering and table turns.
And if you have some capital you'd like to contribute, we're very open to discussing a formal profit-sharing arrangement.
Bringing capital is entirely optional. Finding the right person matters far more., Our location could become a remarkable destination, but it may take months of experimentation, local engagement and persistence to build a sustainable trade.
We're looking for someone who finds that prospect exciting not terrifying.
You'll lead the day-to-day café operation (working alongside our two program/event managers), build the customer base, shape the offering and help us create something financially sustainable and socially meaningful.
Blue Green has a generous network of hospitality professionals, artists, makers, environmentalists and entrepreneurs who will help the café succeed.
We have the foundations. We'll help bring the place to life.
You're entrepreneurial. You enjoy creating things, solving problems, finding customers and turning ideas into reality.
You're a people person. You love building relationships and understand how great cafés become part of their communities.
And you're commercially practical. You understand the margins, systems and hard work behind successful hospitality.
We have the coffee. We have a beautiful three-group La Marzocco espresso machine. We have the furniture (quirky), the equipment (and more on the way), an extraordinary harbourside location (7 minutes from Circular Quay but somehow unknown), and a community of people passionate about nature, climate and making things.
What we don't have is you.
We're looking for a seriously coffee geek who wants to do something different.
Someone who cares deeply about the quality of an espresso, has views on who won the WBC, but also about the future of our planet. Someone who loves hospitality, enjoys people, and has that urge to build new things from scratch.
Perhaps someone who's always dreamed of opening their own café.
A café with a bigger purpose
Blue Green Australia is a Sydney-based social enterprise working across climate adaptation, biodiversity, design and circularity.
We're creating a café at the historic Retort House at Sub Base Platypus, right on Sydney Harbour.
It's a remarkable place. Industrial heritage, spectacular waterfront views, a creative community and surprisingly close to the city. Yet plenty of Sydneysiders don't even know it exists.
We want our café to become a conversation about climate, nature and art.
A welcoming third place where neighbours, artists, scientists, designers and locals can meet, exchange ideas and discover common ground.
Our food and drinks will reflect our values: exceptional coffee, plant-based offerings, ethical sourcing, circular thinking and opportunities to showcase First Nations producers.
But first and foremost, it needs to be a genuinely great café.
The café you've always wanted to open?
We're not looking for someone to simply manage an established business. We're looking for someone who wants to help create one.
Maybe you've spent years working in cafés, imagining what you'd do differently if you had your own place.
Here, much of the hard work is already done. We have the premises, equipment, infrastructure and a supportive network of hospitality and business experts.
You bring the passion, expertise and ideas to make it your own.
