About DHM Partners

DHM Partners is a proactive, growth-focused accounting and advisory firm based in Mildura. We work closely with small to medium businesses, family enterprises and primary producers, providing taxation, business advisory, CFO services, cash flow and budgeting support, and strategic planning.

We’re committed to developing our people and investing in long‑term careers in the profession. As a Cadet Accountant, you’ll be supported to build strong technical skills, real client experience, and a clear pathway into becoming a qualified accountant.

The Opportunity

The Cadet Accountant role is designed for a school leaver who has recently completed their Year 12 studies and is looking to commence a Commerce/Business/Accounting degree. You will gain hands‑on experience in public practice while you study, working alongside senior accountants and partners on real client work.

Ideal role if you want to:
  • Get ahead of your peers with practical, on‑the‑job training
  • Understand how accounting actually works in the real world
  • Build a long‑term career with a local firm that will support your development
Key Responsibilities
  • Under supervision and with appropriate training, you will:
  • Assist with the preparation of:
  • Individual, partnership, company and trust income tax returns
  • Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS)
  • Financial statements for small and medium businesses, SMSFs and trusts
  • Support the team with bookkeeping and data entry, including:
  • Processing bank feeds and coding transactions
  • Accounts receivable and accounts payable processing
    Skills & Attributes

    We’re looking for someone who:

    • Has strong attention to detail and a genuine interest in accounting and business principles
    • Is proactive, organised and able to manage competing deadlines (especially around study and work)
    • Communicates clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing
    • Is willing to learn, ask questions and take feedback on board
    • Works well in a team environment and is comfortable dealing with clients in a professional manner
    • Shows integrity, discretion and respect for confidentiality at all times
    Qualifications & Experience
    • Currently studying (or about to commence) a Bachelor of Business/Commerce with a major in Accounting, or similar
    • Strong academic record to date (VCE and/or university)
    • Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
    • General comfort working with new software and systems
    • Australian permanent residency or citizenship
    Highly Regarded (but not essential)
    • Previous experience in an office, retail or customer service environment
    • Exposure to accounting software such as Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks or similar
    • Genuine interest in a future CA/CPA program and a long‑term career in public practice accounting
    What We Offer
    • On‑the‑job training and mentoring from experienced accountants and partners
    • Flexible hours to support your university timetable (e.g. 2–4 days per week during semester, with potential for additional hours during breaks)
    • Exposure to a broad range of client industries and work types, not just basic data entry
    • A clear development pathway with the potential to transition into a full‑time Graduate Accountant role upon completion of your degree
    • A friendly, professional office environment with a strong focus on teamwork and continuous improvement
