Brunton Engineering & Construction in Somerton, VIC is seeking an experienced Boilermaker/Welder for heavy structural steel fabrication on major infrastructure projects. You will read drawings, set out and weld heavy beams and girders to exacting standards.

This full-time role offers hands-on fabrication, a collaborative workshop environment, overtime opportunities and the chance to contribute to technically challenging builds.

About Brunton Engineering

We build complex, heavy structural steel for major Australian infrastructure projects, including bridges and large structural assemblies.

We’re looking for an experienced Boilermaker / Welder who enjoys hands-on fabrication, takes pride in their workmanship and wants to be involved in technically challenging projects.

This role suits someone with strong heavy steel fabrication skills who can work from drawings, accurately assemble components and produce quality welds.

What You’ll Be Doing

Fabricating and assembling heavy structural steel beams, bridge girders, columns and other large steel components.

Reading and interpreting fabrication drawings, specifications and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).

Measuring, marking out, cutting, preparing, fitting and tack-welding steel components.

Checking dimensions, alignment and fit-up before final welding.

Undertaking MIG/MAG (GMAW) and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW).

Producing high-quality, multi-pass welds on heavy structural steel sections.

Working to applicable AS 1554 requirements and approved welding procedures.

Producing work that meets dimensional, visual inspection and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) requirements.

Working alongside supervisors and other trades to complete fabrication safely and efficiently.

Maintaining Brunton Engineering’s quality and Steelwork Compliance Australia certification standards.

What We’re Looking For

Demonstrated boilermaking and fabrication experience with heavy structural steel.

The ability to read fabrication drawings and accurately mark out, prepare and assemble components.

Strong fit-up skills, with an understanding of tolerances, alignment and distortion control.

Experience with MIG/MAG and flux-cored welding on heavy steel sections.

An understanding of weld preparation, penetration and weld quality.

A strong commitment to safety, quality and workmanship.

Reliability, punctuality and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Flexibility to undertake occasional weekend work when project requirements demand it.

Additional Experience Highly Regarded

Fabrication of bridge girders, heavy beams, columns and complex structural assemblies.

Heavy structural steel work for infrastructure or industrial projects.

Welding to AS 1554.

Experience producing welds subject to Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Visual Testing (VT).

Working within AS 5131 Construction Category 3 (CC3) quality systems.

Experience with MMAW and additional welding processes.

Working within an ISO 3834.2 certified welding environment.

Applicants holding International Welding Practitioner (IWP) or Welding Supervisor qualifications are also encouraged to apply. Brunton Engineering recognises these advanced qualifications and offers remuneration that reflects the additional capability they bring to the business.
