Job summary

Housing Industry Association (HIA) Recruitment team is seeking an Apprentice Field Officer to support the next generation of skilled tradespeople and grow the HIA Apprentices GTO. You will recruit host trainers and apprentices, manage a caseload, and provide ongoing support from commencement through completion.

You will ensure delivery of a high-quality field service program, follow HIA policies, and promote apprenticeships at events and through targeted outreach.

Qualifications

• Familiarity with Australian Apprenticeship system is highly desirable.
• Experience mentoring apprentices is highly regarded.
• Strong interpersonal and presentation skills; professional telephone manner.

Responsibilities

• Recruit new host trainers and apprentices.
• Maintain a mentoring schedule for visits to host trainers and apprentices.
• Monitor trainer capacity to train apprentices and ensure training programs meet standards.
• Conduct workplace performance assessments of all apprentices.
• Counselling interviews and ensure disciplinary standards and procedures are met.
• Arrange for workplace relocation and transfer of apprentices as necessary.
• Provide advice on training agreements and rights/obligations to host trainers and apprentices.
• Promote HIA Apprentices at events and through external channels.
• Conduct WHS/OHS information sessions educating trainers and apprentices on rights and obligations.

HIA Apprentices is a core part of the HIA and has over 40 years’ experience in the recruitment and management of apprentices. HIA Apprentices is a national Group Training Organisation exclusively servicing the residential construction industry.

The Role

The purpose of this role is to support the next generation of skilled tradespeople as an Apprentice Field Officer and play a key role in growing the HIA Apprentices GTO.

You will actively recruit new host trainers and apprentices, manage a caseload of apprentices and trainees, and provide continuous support from commencement through to completion. Additionally, you will ensure the delivery of a high-quality field service program that adheres to HIA policies, procedures, and best practices.

Key responsibilities for this role include:

• Recruitment of new host trainers and apprentices
• Maintain a rigid mentoring schedule for all visits to host trainers and apprentices.
• Monitor on an ongoing basis host trainers ability / capacity to train
• apprentices in order to meet established training programs and standards.
• Conduct workplace performance assessments of all apprentices.
• Conduct counselling interviews and when necessary ensure disciplinary standards and procedures are met
• Arrange for workplace relocation and / or transfer of apprentices as when necessary
• Provide advice to host trainers, apprentices regarding their rights and obligations, and their legal and contractual requirements as related to training agreements.
• Assist as necessary with the promotion of HIA Apprentices at "Career Markets/Expo's" and other events such as HIA Trade Nights, Regional meetings and information nights.
• Promote the HIA Apprentices to potential host trainers in order to initiate application and participation in the scheme.
• To conduct WHS/OH&S information sessions in order to educate host trainers and apprentices in their rights and obligations under the WHS/OH&S Legislation.

The ideal applicant will have the qualities of:

• Knowledge of the Australian Apprenticeship system - Highly desirable but not essential.
• Apprentice mentoring experience (highly regarded).
• Strong relationship building/business development and presentation skills. You must be a people person.
• An ability to generate and secure new business. A proven sales record is desirable.
• High level of interpersonal skills and personal presentation.
• Strong communication skills (oral and written), including a professional telephone manner with ability to listen effectively.
• Well-developed sense of personal work organisation and a high degree of self-motivation, with capacity to prioritise daily tasks, plan and schedule work commitments.
• Dedicated and energetic work ethic, by virtue of personal conduct and quality of work, and a desire to grow within an organization
• Ability to develop effective work relationships to achieve desired results and objectives.
• Understanding and full commitment to WHS.
• Demonstrated positive aptitude for clerical duties, and computer skills including database use.
• Confidence to make urgent on the spot decisions when necessary.
• Knowledge of the Apprenticeship system and industrial award wages and conditions applicable is desirable, but not essential.
• A trade qualification in the building industry, eg- Carpentry, Joinery, Bricklaying etc, and/or Training qualifications eg- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is desirable, but not essential.
• Due to the nature of this role, a current Working with Vulnerable People (children) check, and a National Police check is required.
