Zusammenfassung

University of Vienna invites applications for a Technical Assistant in the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research. You will manage a cytogenetics and genome size laboratory, assist in research projects, and support teaching activities within an international team.

The role requires a relevant degree, IT proficiency, and strong German/English communication. Starting 01.10.2026, full‑time, with a one‑year initial contract and potential extension.

Qualifikationen

  • Completed relevant degree with a focus on chemistry or molecular biology (e.g. HBLVA Rosensteingasse) or an equivalent qualification.
  • Comprehensive IT user skills (e.g. MS Office, Adobe Illustrator).
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills in German and English.
  • Ability to work independently and in a structured manner with a service‑oriented approach.

Aufgaben

  • General laboratory organization and management.
  • Management and supervision of the flow cytometry laboratory, including sample measurement and data documentation.
  • DNA extraction and library preparation for NGS.
  • Basic analyses of plant chromosomes and training for students and visiting scientists.
  • Support in course organization and participation in research projects.

The employment is initially limited to one year but can subsequently be changed to a permanent position following a positive evaluation.

The Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research at the University of Vienna aims to understand biological diversity across all relevant ecological and evolutionary dimensions. By combining expertise from a wide range of biological disciplines, including ecology, morphology, and evolutionary biology, and by studying plants, fungi, and animals, research and teaching at the Department are strongly interdisciplinary. This work is carried out by our diverse and supportive team of academic and non‑academic staff. We are looking for a motivated and committed staff member to strengthen our team.

Your Areas Of Responsibility

The advertised position is based in the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research at the University of Vienna, within the Evolutionary Plant Cytogenetics research group (cytogenetics.univie.ac.at), headed by Prof. Dr. Hanna Schneeweiss and located at Rennweg 14, 1030 Vienna.

We are an international team of students and postdocs working on the processes and patterns of genome evolution in plants at different levels of genome organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for the technical management of our cytogenetics and genome size measurement laboratory, contribute to FWF-funded and other research projects, and support regular teaching activities. We offer a friendly, supportive, and scientifically stimulating working environment, as well as well‑equipped laboratories and facilities.

Your Tasks
  • General laboratory organization and management
  • Management and supervision of the flow cytometry laboratory, including sample measurement, analysis of raw data, conducting experiments, and documenting results for scientific publications
  • DNA extraction and preparation of libraries for NGS (Next Generation Sequencing)
  • Basic analyses of plant chromosomes
  • Technical training and support for students and visiting scientists in the field of flow cytometry
  • Support in the organization and delivery of subject‑specific courses
  • Participation in FWF-funded and other research projects
Your Profile
  • Completed relevant degree with a focus on chemistry or molecular biology (e.g. HBLVA Rosensteingasse), or an equivalent qualification
  • Comprehensive IT user skills (e.g. MS Office, Adobe Illustrator)
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills in German and English
  • Ability to work independently and in a structured manner, a service‑oriented approach, and the ability to find solutions independently
  • Strong teamwork skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Basic theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular/cell biology
  • Experience in cytology (genome size measurement, karyology), and specifically flow cytometry
