Job summary

University of Vienna invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to cover a maternity leave substitution. The role focuses on atomic-scale manipulation of 2D materials using advanced correlative microscopy (STEM, AFM) and EELS, collaborating with national and international partners.

You will mentor students, assist in experiments and data analysis, and contribute to teaching, including a Python course. Workplace is Vienna with a strong research culture.

Qualifications

• PhD in physics or related field with strong research potential.
• Hands-on experience with atomic-resolution electron microscopy and AFM.
• Experience programming in Python; teaching Python is a plus.
• Experience in mentoring students and teaching/research supervision.
• Excellent written and spoken English (C1).
• Ability to work independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to research on atomic-scale structural manipulation of low-dimensional materials using electron/ion irradiation, TEM, AFM, and EELS, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
• Support doctoral and group members in experiments, data analysis, and publication preparation.
• Teach (independently or with others), including co-teaching a Python course per collective bargaining provisions.
• Assist in organizing meetings, conferences, and symposia as needed.
• Handle administrative tasks in research and teaching.
