Job summary

IIASA's Energy, Climate, and Environment program seeks a Researcher (R1) or Research Scholar (R2) to join the Pathways workstream within the Exploring Real Zero project. The role focuses on cross-model analyses, coordinating modelling teams, and synthesising results across IAMs to advance low-emission pathways.

The successful candidate will design surveys, manage data, and contribute to written outputs and publications.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of integrated assessment modelling and mitigation scenario analysis, including residual emissions, carbon dioxide removal and carbon capture and storage
• Proficient in Python for data analysis and reproducible workflows (git)
• Experience with IAMC-format scenario data and modelling frameworks (MESSAGEix, REMIND, GCAM)
• Demonstrated experience writing methodologies and results in reports, papers, or policy materials
• Fluent in English with good presentation skills

Responsibilities

• Lead cross-model innovation gaps analysis across three global IAMs.
• Design and run surveys; quantify residual emissions by sector.
• Develop analytics for modelling protocol and harmonized assumptions.
• Prepare scenario submissions and publish scenario data.
• Embed guardrails into scenario parameterization across modelling teams.
• Implement model advances in MESSAGEix with the sectoral modelling team.
• Support scenario extractions for national fossil fuel phase-out roadmaps.
• Process multi-model IAMC data into indicators with reproducible code.
• Contribute to / lead reports and scientific papers.
• Present methods and results to technical and non-technical audiences.
