Qualifications

Effective supervision helps reduce truck downtime, improve technician utilization, maintain repair quality, and strengthen customer satisfaction while supporting workshop revenue and gross margin objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct daily workshop activity covering preventive maintenance, scheduled servicing, diagnostics, and heavy-duty truck repairs.
  • Review incoming jobs and assign work according to technician competence, urgency, workload, and required completion time.
  • Monitor every active repair against agreed timelines and intervene quickly when delays or technical obstacles arise.
  • Balance workshop capacity to maximize technician productivity and minimize idle time.
  • Guide mechanics and technicians through complex mechanical faults and difficult diagnostic cases.
  • Provide practical technical support for engine, drivetrain, braking, suspension, and other heavy commercial vehicle systems where required.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance work is performed according to prescribed service intervals and technical standards.
  • Review completed service and repair documentation for accuracy before job closure.
  • Conduct quality checks on completed work and ensure identified defects are rectified before vehicle release.
  • Maintain strong control over comeback repairs and recurring technical issues.
  • Support achievement of workshop labour sales, parts sales, revenue, and gross margin targets.
  • Track turnaround time and take corrective action when workshop performance falls below expected levels.
  • Coordinate with service advisors on job progress, repair status, additional work, and estimated completion times.
  • Keep the Service Manager informed of operational bottlenecks, major delays, breakdown priorities, and resource constraints.
  • Supervise mechanics, technicians, service advisors, and apprentices during daily workshop activities.
  • Coach team members on technical procedures, workmanship expectations, productivity, and safe working practices.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and regular safety briefings.
  • Enforce health and safety requirements throughout workshop operations.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, work areas, and repair bays are maintained in safe operating condition.
  • Coordinate with procurement and parts teams to address component availability affecting job completion.
  • Support urgent breakdown requirements and prioritize repairs that directly affect fleet availability.
  • Prepare daily and weekly reports covering completed jobs, downtime, utilization, productivity, and operational performance.
  • Analyze workshop issues and introduce corrective measures to improve workflow and service delivery.
  • Promote accountability, disciplined working practices, and continuous improvement across the team.
Ideal Profile
  • Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in workshop operations, heavy-duty truck maintenance, servicing, or repair.
  • Proven supervisory experience leading technicians, mechanics, service advisors, or apprentices.
