Job summary

ARX | smart minds in Dubai is seeking a Tunnel Engineer with proven experience in tunnel design, underground structures, and major infrastructure projects. You will independently manage design packages, coordinate interfaces, and deliver technical outputs for TBM, NATM, and other methods.

The role requires 5–8 years in tunnel engineering, strong knowledge of geotechnical design, and proficiency with PLAXIS, RS2/RS3, Midas FEA, FLAC, and Abaqus. English fluency is essential, Arabic a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in tunnel or civil/structural engineering
• 5–8 years of experience in tunnel engineering or major infrastructure projects
• Experience designing tunnels, shafts, portals, underground stations and related works
• Proficiency with tunnel/geotechnical software (PLAXIS, RS, Midas, FLAC, Abaqus)
• Fluent English; Arabic is a plus

Responsibilities

• Independently prepare tunnel and underground works design packages for TBM, NATM, drill-and-blast tunnels, shafts, cross-passages and related works
• Coordinate interfaces with civil, structural, geotechnical, BIM/CAD and construction teams; deliver technical submissions
• Develop and interpret numerical models using listed software
• Prepare design reports, specifications, BOQs and technical submissions
• Review geotechnical models and design parameters to support project development
• Provide guidance to junior engineers and participate in client meetings and design reviews
• Ensure deliverables meet schedules, quality requirements, and applicable codes and standards

Tunnel Engineer - 100% (m/f)

The ideal candidate should have proven experience in tunnel engineering, underground structures, and major infrastructure projects. They should be capable of independently managing design packages, coordinating multidisciplinary interfaces, delivering technical outputs, and supporting junior engineers.

Responsibilities:

• Independently prepare tunnel and underground works design packages for TBM tunnels, NATM tunnels, drill-and-blast tunnels, shafts, portals, cross passages and junctions, underground stations, cut-and-cover structures, and related geotechnical works.


• Perform and document engineering calculations for tunnel linings (including rebar reinforcement and detailing), excavation support systems, segmental linings, primary and secondary support systems, ground support measures, and ground-structure interaction.


• Develop, analyse, and interpret numerical models using software such as PLAXIS2D/PLAXIS3D, Rocscience RS2/RS3, Midas FEA, FLAC, Abaqus, or similar tools.


• Prepare and coordinate design reports, specifications, BOQs, technical submissions, and design deliverables.


• Review geotechnical models and design parameters to support project development.


• Coordinate technical interfaces with civil, structural, geotechnical, BIM/CAD, MEP, and construction teams.


• Prepare responses to client comments, technical review comments, RFIs, and design queries.


• Undertake tunnel impact studies, settlement assessments, instrumentation and monitoring evaluations, and construction-stage engineering assessments.


• Contribute to constructability reviews, risk assessments, value engineering exercises, and support-class development.


• Review and provide guidance on work produced by Junior and Assistant Engineers.


• Participate in client meetings, technical workshops, and multidisciplinary design reviews.


• Ensure assigned deliverables meet project schedules, quality requirements, and applicable codes and standards.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Tunnel Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.


• Master's degree in Tunnel Engineering, Underground Structures, or Rock Mechanics is an advantage.


• 5 to 8 years of relevant experience in tunnel engineering, underground structures, geotechnical design, or major infrastructure projects.


• Demonstrated experience in the design of tunnels, shafts, portals, underground stations, cross passages, temporary works, or excavation support systems.


• Strong understanding of tunnel support systems, and underground construction methods. rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and settlement assessment.


• Proficiency in tunnel and geotechnical analysis software such as PLAXIS2D/3D, RS2/RS3, Slide, Midas FEA, FLAC or equivalent.


• Experience preparing and coordinating engineering calculations, reports, specifications, drawings, and technical submissions.


• Familiarity with international tunnel, structural and geotechnical design standards and guidelines.


• Experience working within BIM-enabled project delivery environments.


• Strong technical writing, communication, and coordination skills.


• Fluent written and spoken English; additional languages, including Arabic, are an advantage.


• International underground infrastructure project experience, including in the Middle East, is preferred
