Job summary

ARX Gruppe AG in Dubai seeks a senior Tunnel Engineer to independently manage tunnel design packages for TBM, NATM and other underground works, coordinating interfaces with multidisciplinary teams.

You will perform engineering calculations, develop numerical models with PLAXIS and RS2/RS3, draft reports, and support client reviews while ensuring compliance with international standards. Fluent English; Arabic a plus; 5–8 years in tunnel projects; BIM-enabled delivery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Tunnel Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field.
• 5–8 years of tunnel engineering and underground structures experience.
• Experience in design of tunnels, shafts, underground stations and supports.
• Proficiency with tunnel/geotechnical analysis software.

Responsibilities

• Independently prepare tunnel and underground design packages (TBM, NATM, drill-and-blast).
• Perform engineering calculations for tunnel linings and ground support systems.
• Develop and interpret numerical models using PLAXIS, RS2/RS3, and Midas FLAC/Abaqus.
• Prepare design reports, specifications, BOQs, and technical submissions.
• Coordinate interfaces with civil, geotechnical, BIM/CAD, MEP teams.
• Review geotechnical models and respond to client comments and RFIs.
• Contribute to constructability reviews, risk assessments, and value engineering.

The ideal candidate should have proven experience in tunnel engineering, underground structures, and major infrastructure projects. They should be capable of independently managing design packages, coordinating multidisciplinary interfaces, delivering technical outputs, and supporting junior engineers.

Responsibilities

• Independently prepare tunnel and underground works design packages for TBM tunnels, NATM tunnels, drill-and-blast tunnels, shafts, portals, cross passages and junctions, underground stations, cut-and-cover structures, and related geotechnical works.
• Perform and document engineering calculations for tunnel linings (including rebar reinforcement and detailing), excavation support systems, segmental linings, primary and secondary support systems, ground support measures, and ground-structure interaction.
• Develop, analyse, and interpret numerical models using software such as PLAXIS2D/PLAXIS3D, Rocscience RS2/RS3, Midas FEA, FLAC, Abaqus, or similar tools.
• Prepare and coordinate design reports, specifications, BOQs, technical submissions, and design deliverables.
• Review geotechnical models and design parameters to support project development.
• Coordinate technical interfaces with civil, structural, geotechnical, BIM/CAD, MEP, and construction teams.
• Prepare responses to client comments, technical review comments, RFIs, and design queries.
• Undertake tunnel impact studies, settlement assessments, instrumentation and monitoring evaluations, and construction-stage engineering assessments.
• Contribute to constructability reviews, risk assessments, value engineering exercises, and support-class development.
• Review and provide guidance on work produced by Junior and Assistant Engineers.
• Participate in client meetings, technical workshops, and multidisciplinary design reviews.
• Ensure assigned deliverables meet project schedules, quality requirements, and applicable codes and standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Tunnel Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
• Master's degree in Tunnel Engineering, Underground Structures, or Rock Mechanics is an advantage.
• 5 to 8 years of relevant experience in tunnel engineering, underground structures, geotechnical design, or major infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated experience in the design of tunnels, shafts, portals, underground stations, cross passages, temporary works, or excavation support systems.
• Strong understanding of tunnel support systems, and underground construction methods. rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and settlement assessment.
• Proficiency in tunnel and geotechnical analysis software such as PLAXIS2D/3D, RS2/RS3, Slide, Midas FEA, FLAC or equivalent.
• Experience preparing and coordinating engineering calculations, reports, specifications, drawings, and technical submissions.
• Familiarity with international tunnel, structural and geotechnical design standards and guidelines.
• Experience working within BIM-enabled project delivery environments.
• Strong technical writing, communication, and coordination skills.
• Fluent written and spoken English; additional languages, including Arabic, are an advantage.
• International underground infrastructure project experience, including in the Middle East, is preferred
