Senior Tunnel Engineer - 100% (m/f)
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of tunnel and underground infrastructure packages including TBM tunnels, NATM tunnels, drill-and-blast tunnels, shafts, portals, cross passages and junctions, underground stations, cut-and-cover structures, and associated geotechnical works.
- Provide technical leadership for the development of engineering solutions, design strategies, construction methodologies, and risk mitigation measures.
- Review and approve calculations, numerical models, design reports, specifications, BOQs, technical submissions, and engineering drawings.
- Lead complex analyses involving excavation support systems, tunnel linings (including rebar reinforcement and detailing), TBM launch structures (steelworks design and detailing), tunnel or shaft openings, settlement assessments, groundwater interactions, ground improvement, and ground-structure interaction, including 3D numerical modelling.
- Manage technical risks, constructability challenges, design interfaces, and critical engineering decisions throughout project development.
- Lead multidisciplinary coordination with geotechnical, structural, civil, MEP, BIM/CAD, construction, and project-management teams.
- Act as design lead during client meetings, design reviews, workshops, value-engineering sessions, and stakeholder discussions.
- Review geotechnical models, monitoring results, and construction feedback to inform project decisions.
- Develop and oversee instrumentation and monitoring strategies, risk assessments, and mitigation plans for sensitive assets and urban environments.
- Mentor and develop Junior, Assistant, and Engineer-level staff through technical guidance, checking, coaching, and knowledge-sharing.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, industry standards, client requirements, and internal quality systems.
- Support project planning, resource allocation, programme management, proposal preparation, and pursuit activities where required.
- Take accountability for technical quality, delivery performance, and engineering excellence across assigned projects.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Tunnel Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
- Master's degree in Tunnel Engineering, Underground Structures, or Rock Mechanics is strongly preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in tunnel engineering, underground structures, and major infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience leading tunnel and underground works design packages on complex infrastructure projects.
- Extensive knowledge of tunnel design methodologies, excavation support systems, underground construction techniques, structural analysis, settlement assessment, and geotechnical engineering principles.
- Advanced proficiency in numerical modelling and geotechnical analysis tools such as PLAXIS 2D/3D, RS2/RS3, FLAC, UDEC, Abaqus, Midas FEA, or equivalent software.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical reviews, design assurance activities, and multidisciplinary engineering coordination.
- Strong understanding of international tunnelling, structural, geotechnical and infrastructure design standards.
- Experience presenting technical solutions and recommendations directly to clients and stakeholders.
- Proven mentoring and team-development capabilities.
- Excellent leadership, communication, report-writing, and stakeholder‑management skills.
- Fluent written and spoken English; additional languages, including Arabic, are an advantage.
- Experience on large-scale metro, rail, highway, water / wastewater, utility, or urban underground infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
